388,000 is a lot, even for a 27 year old. That's 14,000/year all thru its life. So I suspect its actually not right, its possible somoene fiddled with the instrument cluster and it stuck at the (higher) figure, since I can't see anyone wanting to clock a car to show higher mileage.  Especially since its been stood for years.

Many of our cars are on their 3rd or more replacement of a component which the manufacturer would have thought was "life of car" - for example gearbox, interior, etc, or have been restored "twice" with welding underneath etc.

When i went to greece the guys there all have mercs, this guy said his merc had over 1m miles on it. I was unsure whether he was telling porkys but he didnt seem to be lying and what would be the point.

I was just a little apprehensive that the thing may just fall to bits at any minute.

fantastic german engineering though

seen a guy with an old bsa bantham 125 in sheringham proped up on the wall, me and a mate was looking round it and i thought it had been pulled from the sea (no joke). then this ol guy comes walikng up to us (i mean like 75yrs old). he starts telling us how its now on its 3rd engine and he rode it down from up north. there was a wooden handmade topbox on it and written on that was all the places he'd taken the bike. india, africa, spain…… this covered all 4 sides to the box(and it was a big box), he also thought it would be good to write the milage at each destination. this bike had done (and i can't remember the exact milage) over 1,000,000 miles.

i promise you this is NOT made up,
he then went on to say that he had left for sheringham some days earlier but got pulled by the police cos they "claimed" the framewas bent on the bike, and they could see that just following him 8O .
he then popped on his helmet (as old as him) jumped on the bike and plodded off down the road.
well thats some milage.

the scirocco i totaled earlier this year had 349k miles on it, original motor, i was the 3rd owner.

i pulled the steering rack from the scirocco at the pull apart junk yard 2 weeks ago and put it on my 83 GTI.  it just keeps going and going, hell the GTI has 173k and runs good.
