This diagram will explain offset. Genuine VW wheels for mk1's are ET35 or ET38. The lower the number the more the outer rim will stick out (positive offset) and the higher the number the more the inner rim will stick in (negative offset). I've heard it said that you can generally go
-/+ 5 on the offset without any problems on Mk1's so that would suggest extremes of ET31 or ET42 but remember that's in theory and of course the wheel width and ride height both come into play.

People go much further that the +/- 5 which you stated without any problems.

I know they do but often the compromise is spacers, arch modifications, stretched or wrong size tyres or rock hard suspension to stop scrubbing.

wheels are 6j but are only 13'' so not like the 15's that most people put on so dont have any issues at all and look really wide fitting some new suspension in the next week or so with a 40mm drop but checked it and tested on a mates car with my wheels and my spacers on and still no scrubbing issues so its all good!

Spacers you can get from ebay, venom motorsport (i think) etc etc. Not hard to find.

et of 42 is quite far out, so you may have some issues of the wheels catching suspension especially if running low coilovers!!
I had Ronal turbo's 7j ET 23 with 195 tyresand when the coiles were wound down they rubbed on the springs, solution fitted 5mm spacers thus giving clearance of ET18.. didnt stick out past the arches!!
