-/+ 5 on the offset without any problems on Mk1's so that would suggest extremes of ET31 or ET42 but remember that's in theory and of course the wheel width and ride height both come into play.

I know they do but often the compromise is spacers, arch modifications, stretched or wrong size tyres or rock hard suspension to stop scrubbing.

et of 42 is quite far out, so you may have some issues of the wheels catching suspension especially if running low coilovers!!
I had Ronal turbo's 7j ET 23 with 195 tyresand when the coiles were wound down they rubbed on the springs, solution fitted 5mm spacers thus giving clearance of ET18.. didnt stick out past the arches!!
