MK1 vs MK2

MK1 vs MK2

Here in Italy a good GTI MK2 may cost less than 1000 euro, while all decent MK1 start from 3000.

I know, I know, MK1 is THE Golf, but for daily use you get some fancy things, such as electric windows, AC, powered steering weel etc…

Is it really so bad to stop looking for an MK1 and concentrate on a GTI or even a GTI 16v MK2?

Mere speculation…

I'm surprised of the price difference. Maybe the cheap Mk2s are all bodged or worn out? You tend to find that Mk1s, being so old, have had work done on them. They may still be old/worn out too though. But then thats generalising…..

I must admit id give my right arm to own a mk2 cabby  :D

Dont ask what your club can do for you, but what can you do for your club?

The Mk2 is a superb car . You only have to look at the numbers still on the road as daily drivers . What other car's of the same age have so many still running ?

Buy the Mk2 run it daily then save and buy a MK1 for fun at the weekends

I have both, well kind of, the MK2 GL, its got all the electrics, windows, Central locking, power steering, plus nice comfy seats, V low mileage etc and I dont use it  :banghead: I drive the Mk1 and it gets you, its so much more fun, better to look at, I keep thinking of selling the MK2, but as its such good nick I wont get what i want for it, plus everytime i go to advertise i was it, clean it and look at the paperwork and think i should just put it away and save it for another twenty years..

But I know that I'd rather drive the MK1 over anything else..

Is it a Corrado? Nice car, it is another option if I cannot get any decent GTO mk1 or 2!

The wife is going on about getting a 4x4, I can't stand 'em but if she does I'm selling the Volvo and buying a Corrado as a daily runner and she can drive the bloody family workhorse everywhere instead.

Defo the Mk1 for me over the Mk2. In fact, not since the latest Mk5 have any of the others come close, with the Mk3 without doubt the worst of the lot.

VW seems to have really taken a dip but have made a big recovery with the latest model which is the best one since the Mk1 IMO.

I have to say i have owned all mk`s, inc 5 mk1`s, and a mk3, including 2 G60`s (a Rallye and Corrado) and VR6 Highline Golf, and they are all good cars.

I cant fault any of them, sure the mk1 maybe more pretty and nostalgic, and the mk2 more refined and better equiped, the mk3 got a bit bigger, but definately became more luxurious in a lot of ways, but untill you have lived with, driven and appreciated one of the later GTI`s, or a 6 cylinder or a supercharged golf or corrado then to slate any is a little harsh.

fortunately for me i have owned them, and can honestly say geting into a Highline mk3 VR6 is like driving a rolls royce compared to my mk1 8O  that said i love my mk1, i dont expect anything from either of them as they are entirely different beasts………………and this   is my latest G60 i picked up today!! Vrrrrooooooooooom

64k 2 owners, full history, and standard (except stainless jetex and de cat  )……does it get any better?  it sounds awesome!

I personally really like MK2's and was only last week about to part ex my MK1 for a tornado red mk2 GTi with a 9a. lovely car, really solid, too solid. They just arent the same to drive, for me and what i ant from a car.

Although as a daily driver, brilliant and will definitly be 1 for me in the future.

Its all personal opinions isn't it! Great stuff.

I have to disagree about the Mk3 though. I too have owned all 5 marks including a VR6 for a number of years, and have to say it was the worst of the lot! It was more luxurious and probably the fastest in a straight line and mid-range, but I found it really dull (both to look at and drive), and I certainly can't say that about the Mk1s and Mk5s!

Love the G60, that looks like the opposite of dull!

Ive owned mk1, 2 and 3, and use the mk3 for a daily. I find that the mk1 is in a different leage to the rest, and doesnt need luxury, because you love it for the shape, and looks… not the leather interior, eletric windows etc…
I had a mk2, and wasnt that fond of it tbh, but my mk3 is a different story!
I love my mk3 golf, and is nice to have aswell as a mk1. The mk3 is a luxury mk2 imo, and as for looks, i think my mk3 looks great
I am however selling it to buy a new skoda fabia

Well, I am in love with the Polo GTI. The 1781 cc… engine, doesn't it ring any bell?

BTW, I have owned the mk1 1.1 GL (demolished to buy the 1997 mk3 GT Special 2.0), the mk2 GTI 16v (regret to have demolished after a banal accident), the mk3 GT Special 2.0 115 HP, the Cabrio.

The mk1 had soul, not only the Cabrio, but also the quiter GL, the GTI 16v was a beast but we have never gone on well together, the mk3 was comfy but boooooring. It had the GTI engine, but the whole car was a simpler thing (for instance the wheels with 4 nuts). Have you ever had in the UK that kind of thing? Or the mk3 2L came only in the GTI shell?
