My first race this weekend. It has been a long hard slog to get this far, and all my time and money.
Testing tomorrow.
I have G60 brakes now, and they seem to make a difference on the road test - mostly all new. Bias valve should keep the rear in check. They got hot during the road test, and where not locking. Very happy to have rear discs now.
Lots of other improvements since I last used the car, mostly new suspension/steering components and strut braces. Different exhaust system. Rebuilt gearbox.
Still lots to do though - Finished at 12 last night, up again at 5.30 am this morning.
John will be out in his mk1 golf too. Not sure how the two cars will compare, let alone the drivers (my first race and all).
Saturday - Qualifying at 9'ish. First race at 1'ish, second race at 5'ish - or there abouts!
Maybe see you there

2nd and 1st in Class B. Very happy.
If anyone else is considering it, a mk1 would be very competitive in class B.
There is still lots of room for improvement within the Regulations…
The cast manifold isn't flowed that much - a decent tubular manifold is needed.
It needs some castor and solid top mounts.
I am still 60kg over my 850kg limit - Heavy wheels/brakes extra bars and equipment.
the car need to be lower, and better weight distribution across the back.
some pictures on my blog if its of interest to anyone

I lost alot of ground in the first lap…. avoiding oil, wrong gear etc etc. But I clawed my way back.
The 2nd half of Part 1 gets a bit boring until I catch up the next group of cars
Part 2
If you are considering racing - you must. It is much better than trackdays, and you don't need a fancy car or bits. And Its not as expensive as it is made out to be once you have the gear. I use part-worn tyres.. Finding the time is the hardest part.
Would be great to race against some more mk1's!

Hi All,
The Mk2 Golf GTI Championship will be visiting Thruxton on September 3rd for a Championship round. In addition to this, due to an exceptional 'one off' offer of very low priced track time, we plan to run a Non Championship V.A.G. Trophy round.
The cost for a 20 minute race and 15 minute qualifying session is £120 !, but we need to know ASAP who's interested as we have a minimum number of grid slots to fill.
Additionally, as this is a Non Championship round the regulations can be a little looser than usual - let us know what you want to run and we'll consider it - this can be regarded (almost) as a V.A.G. Allcomers race - could be awesome !.
N.B. All cars must be 'race (rather than track day) ready'.
If you're interested email us at vagtrophyinfo@aol.com - we look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards,
John Hillon,
V.A.G. Trophy Championship Co-ordinator.
