Mk1 GTI chassis number

Just been to see a GTI 83 off ebay and I just wondered where the chassis number is stamped into the car.
This didn't even have a vin plate-got lost in the respray!!

What year? 1980 or earlier  - on the right front suspension turret. Later models - on the scuttle

It was an 83 in Lhasa green,thought it should be on the scuttle somewhere but couldn't see it.

If it has a scuttle cover its obvious - its in the transparent window.

on scuttle right behind inlet manifold 8)
