I've had one for a couple of months now. Great fun. Economical ?90 insurance. About 60000 miles to the gallon.
everyone should have one.

I had one for my first car, wasn't too good on fuel though!

Once you have one you will keep coming back to them, it really was fun, I miss it and all my mates miss it!

i'm not after a 1.3

I have one. Good on fuel as long as you keep off the motorways!

I think it will be great for you as a  first car. There not too slow either to be fair.

Had it for a while now and added a few mods

I had one as my first car, it was a Mars Red 3-door 1100 Golf N, 1979 on a T-reg - series 1 small tail light model.  Excellent car, really loved it.  I ended up putting P-slot alloys and GTI seats in it plus some other bits and pieces including a twin lamp grill.  My dad had three of them (well 2 and a 13 Driver plus loads of Polos) so I learned loads about keeping it fit and healthy.

Parts were cheap, it was easy to work on and it wasn't slow either (no GTI beater but setup right it kept with my mates Nova 1300 SR's and the like).  Great on fuel, cheap insurance, loads of space, looked great, drove great.  I could honestly not recommend a better 1st car (although if you can find a 1.3 Driver it's got all the nice GTI bits already on it).
