Side stripes upside down are a bit odd for such an original car!!

Nice to see one in that condition, but as the keen eyed mk1 peeps have said…a few things out of place.

They have some hot stuff on their books, but at least the side stripes should have been done right.

Pretty sure they sell for clients hence the jacked up price as their bit will be on top.

Mk1 Campaign

This was my car - until today.  Very sad to see it go.  As for the remarks about valuation, to be honest, if I am in a position to buy a Mk1 with similar mileage and condition a few years from now, I would gladly pay more.  Unfortunately, I couldn't sell it myself, otherwise I would have asked for around £11-12k, but I had to give a chunk of the final price as commission.

thats the point though isnt it? i saw this some weeks ago, low mileage, original and unrestored??

that means either the factory put the stripes on wrong or this car (like many) has a hidden past!

One odd tyre, sunroof not adjusted correctly, stone chips in the bonnet?(mentioned that in the add)

original, i think not, so that means some poor bugger just got ripped off!

Do it once and do it right! ok, we've identified the problem, lets not make it worse by guessing……… Identifying the sympton is not the same as understanding the cause :)

Thanks for the comments.  Regarding the stripes, I have had this car since 2007 and never noticed!  It has been to GTI International a couple of times and no one pointed it out!   :redfaced:   It is not my first Mk1 though - I had a silver one with a dealer fitted BBS Bodykit with 62k on the clock before this one.  I am currently working in Saudi Arabia so could not sell it myself.

As for the price, I have noticed that a lot of high priced GTIs attract negative attention and I have never understood why.  I have always been prepared to pay top money for an excellent example of a car that is a motoring icon.  I would rather pay good money for something in excellent condition, than buy a rusting hulk and spend £££1000's modding it or restoring it, although I understand that for some people, that is part of the attraction of buying the car!

I remember seeing a lovely red series 1 with about 72k miles on the clock a few years back in GTI International and the owner - an elderly gentleman - told me he had refused an offer of £11k or so for the car.  Its not everyday that you will see a straight Mk1 with very low mileage and pretty much complete history - MOTs, services and other receipts - so why would anyone expect to get it on the cheap?!  I also priced it as I did not really want to sell it, but it still went and at the end of the day, you all know the well-worn cliche that a car is worth exactly what something is willing to pay for it.

I'm not sure what to make of your comments except that they are so completely off-track that I mistook you for a troll until I saw your post count and registration date.  The advert never mentioned unrestored, although apart from the stripes and the front chrome badge, everything is original including the original dealer plates and the original dealer sticker on the rear hatch window.  There was an advert for a white Mk1 that mentioned unrestored as part of the description - maybe you were thinking about that and made a mistake?

Everything else you mentioned has an obvious and innocent explanation… the stripes were put on - wrongly, as it now turns out - by the previous owner who wanted to freshen up the car.  Your insinuation that the car has a hidden past is basically libelous. He also put the odd tyre on after a puncture on the previous tyre, but it never really bothered me as I did not want to remove the older Pirelli's that belonged to the car to match them.  Not sure what happened with that sunroof, but I think that it was not closed properly before the photoshoot as it does sit flush - I have just checked some old photos of mine when it was sat in the local dealers for the Mk6 launch in 2009.  As for stone chips in the bonnet, well that is normal when a car is driven!!!  :banghead:  If there were no stone chips - and they are very few in number and tiny - I would wonder about the car!

As for whether I ripped off someone, well that is your personal opinion and you are entitled to it, but judging by your avatar, I think I know exactly where that sentiment is coming from!     It is sad that a fellow GTI enthusiast has to make snide comments about a car he has never seen in the flesh… and I have never had to write a post like this online on any forum that I am a member of before.

I don't understand how anyone has been ripped off here ?

The car was advertised clearly with a price on the open market. I am sure the buyer went and gave it the once over and decided to him/her that it was worth parting with their cash.

I am going to lock this thread as opinions have been made known and I don't think it there is any more milage in the thread.

Perhaps illyun and tubbett should exchange a pm or two…

Cheers,
Ade
