Mk1 Family Tree - White 1983 GTI - Reg. A979 RYT

I currently own an Alpine White 1800 MK1 GTI which I bought from my next door neighbour just over 2 years ago now. He also bought it locally but back in 2000 it was owned by a guy called Anthony Ayton from Beckenham, Kent. I think he may have been a Club GTI member as it came with a membership sticker on the windscreen. Sadly I received very little history with the car when I bought it. It's had 7 former keepers, prior to me. Are any of you on this forum ??
Any info would be appreciated 8O

Cant help you with the car but i notice you are in sunny teesside.  I live in yarm myself and am currently restoring my silver mk1 campaign in my uncles garage in south bank.  Is your car on the road as i havent seen it round here?.

Hi Dan,

Yes, my car's on the road though I tend to use it the good weather and have a Mk2 Jetta for winter use. It underwent a light restoration early in 2004 when I had new rear arches and a glass out/doors etc off, full respray. There doesn't seem to be many MK1 owners locally so it's good to hear from another one. A pal of mine is getting his Mk1 done by a bodyshop 'over the border', who do work for that Triple Six outfit so that will be ready early in the NY. I live in Skelton, just up from Saltburn. I went back to my MK1 roots after previously running a Nugget Yellow G60 Corrado for 6 years. A much more noticeable car
How long have you owned yours and will it be ready for showtime ?  GTI International clashes with my good ladys Birthday so I reckon that one is out for me but I intend to go to Tatton Park for VWNW on 13/8 Domain parking page and the Leeds Vw Festival on 26/6 VW Festival, 11th - 13th August 2023 @ Harewood House, Leeds :: VW Festival

Teesside Convoy ?

My last MK1 was A953 RYT! There must be a way you can get info on previous owners of your vehicle, but not sure how. Have you tried contacting the DVLA at all?

MK1 GTI Campaign
MK2 GTI 8v
Imitation Magic Tree - 'Black Ice' smell
Plenty of rust
Embarrasing fuel problem
Porous cooling system!

I`m going all out to get the car back on the road late spring/early summer.  I would be really interested in any bodyshop that you can recommend as my car will be getting a full respray.  Jobs done so far include new axle mounting points, both rear chassis outriggers, repairs to both inner sills, both rear inner arches replaced, rear axle rebuilt with new bushes and powder coated, repairs to rear floor pan.
Currently the car is waiting for both outer sills to be welded in place and o/s rear arch to be welded on and rear panel which i have readly to go on along with some new vw wings.  Going to get some new flexi fuel lines and replace all of the brake lines.  Struggling to see any light at the end of the tunnel at the moment!.  If i can get the car ready then i`d be definately up for a north-east convoy down to a show.

Thanks for the suggestions chaps. I will follow them up but it was service type history I was interested in….engine work etc. I guess it had been well looked after (for the most part) but am lacking receipts etc.

Hi Daniboy,

Yours sounds a major restoration. I guess you're doing much of the work yourself and would then be looking for a suitable sprayshop ? I trawled round quite a bit in pursuit of a suitable outfit and went for a garage up in Stokesley (Tim Brown & Sons), where I was able to do some of the work myself. Whilst the general finish was very good I wasn't 100% happy with their attention to detail and it's a bit of an eye opener when you're a fly on the wall in a bodyshop, as I was. My mates car should hopefully receive a good job when it's finally done but that's been the problem. The bodyshop where it's being done gets a lot of work from Triple 6 so the Golf is constantly playing second fiddle to Saxo bonnet scoops etc.

Good luck with your cars completion and stay in touch for the convoy suggestion.

Its a joint effort between my uncle who is a mechanic/welder/auto electrician, my dad who is a fabricator by trade and me (i can make a cracking cup of tea!).  I`m hopeing to find somewhere that will agree to let me prepare the car for painting and then just wheel it into the booth.  This might prove to be a problem though as a lot of places dont want to risk their reputation by finishing what could turn out to be a poorly prepared car.  I`m back in the garage this weekend to start working on it again and am hopeing to be getting it sprayed by the end of march.
What let your respray down if you dont mind me asking?  Let us know how your mate gets on.

Slight bubbling on the leading edge of the drivers door, just a few months after the respray. They re-did this though. Then they overlooked the valance to wheel-well section, that required plating, plus a lack of paint applied to the edges of the arches. Fortunately I was on hand to see to the latter but I was a bit miffed that I had to do it. As I say attention to detail was at times lacking a bit. However it was a very nice job overall.

I can see your problem persuading someone to add the 'icing to the cake' and would assume a bodyshop would want to do the paint prep' from start to finish. It sounds like you have plenty of experts to hand to do the tricky stuff though. You'll have to post some pics.

My uncle works at Kevs auto-electrics which is where the car is getting worked on. Its straight on past eston baths into south bank and its on your left near the newsagents.  Car looks nice in them shots Dubpartz, did you take engine and dashout for respray?.  Forgive my ignorance mk1 but where is Thorntree again?.  Are you attending any shows this year?  Could be daniboy, dubpartz and mk1 in a restored golf convoy, sweet!.

Daniboy,

My mates just joined the forum. He's the one whose car is being done at the bodyshop over the border. He's posted pics on the New Folks section under the title of 'Brand New'. Check it  :y:
