Mk1 carb GTI

Hello,

I have had my car for some time now, it is a series 1 1979 mk1. it came fitted with the 1.5lt carb engine. it is a two door version. i wish to ask that is my car is a GTi version, as on the insurence it says Gti but most people tell me that as Gti stands for Grand torismo injection thus my car cannot be under this catrgory. can anyone please shed some light.

If u could also define the difference between a GTi and a non GTi mk1.

regards

GTI version will have had, over & above the other hatchback models:

side stripes
lowered suspension
wider wheels and tyres (most being alloy, only early GTIs would have come with steel wheels standard)
vented discs at the front
rear brake compensator
distinctive striped seats
black headlining
rev counter (some other models had this too)
oil temperature gauge
1.6 fuel injected engine, later 1.8 fuel injected engine
all but earliest models with close ratio 5 speed gearbox
chin spoiler
red surround on grille
