Made some more progress on me track car

I fitted my proper mk1 gti duckbill to the gti today, and while i was there I also descided to see what it was like if i took the bumpers off to have a couple of more kilos…

what do you all think?

Its starting to grow on me, it looks far better in the flesh than on the pics, i just need to sort out the indicators now and mesh over the 2 exposed inlets now.

Im getting there with it, it should be all done by feb ready for trackday season, I hope….

I quite like the look of them without front bumpers, look hard… but not sure about the back tho..

where did the duckbill come from? I'm after one

Love the look, had mine like this for two years now

Speeding is like masturbation, everyone does it ,but it's not something you should record and put on the internet!!

the duckbill came from german and sweedish.

the only thing im not sure of on mine is the exhaust as it now sticks out quite far.

i just need to find a way to cover up the holes in the chassis longis and fit some new front indicators

Off topic but interesting shot next to the bmw. see how big the golf windows are compared to the other german car. now i consider vision to be quite an important safety aspect.

small side windows are becoming more common as it helps improve safety in side impacts as manufactures can control how your body interacts with the trim etc, but not with a window/frsh air. (    its me job )

I realise that but perhaps with better vision maybe not so many accidents to be protected from.

Lookin good so far.

What engine mods have you done ?

Definitely needs the exhaust adjusting as you've already said.

Looks good. 8)

Just need to bear in mind there's no bumpers to stop your bodywork being bumped instead.

Yradave says relax.

Got the indicators done today, and the silicon hoses are all done too,

tbh looking at the loading paths if the bump is enough to do the bumpers in it will be enough to adjust the chassis logis so ill be in the same mess, but its not my everyday car its jut a play thing so it will spend most time on the track.

The engines a rebuilt 1.8 thats been over bored, rebuilt head, audi throttle and inlet ported to match, newmans 280deg cam, KN pannel filter, cold air feed to air box, jetex exhaust system, and next week i will be getting my 4 into 1 manifold. the it just needs a RR set up. its not a monster engine, but it should be pretty potent.

How much do the bumpers actually weigh? I've been thinking about loosing mine to save weight

the bumpers saved a WHOOPING 6kg or so!    so sod all!!! not the gains i was told! but hey ho.

I took him out for his proper first run since venting the breather to atmos an re setting the mixture and hes non to shabby, so fingers crossed with the proper exhaust manifold on he will be a bit of a sleeper, i just need to get the better half driving him now, and sort out some better brakes as they were not too bad on the track once hot but on the road they seem a  bit useless, which im a bit miffed about as i they are proper fast road zinnerman discs too, maybe a new larger MC and servo are called for before i start fitting bigger discs (more un sprung wieght see… bad)

both!  it may have been a smidge more as i didnt actually weigh them, but they were bloody light for what they are! ive lifted moden plastic bumper that wiegh more!!!!

bet its going to be a right laugh on track..

Donny at the end of Nov was my frst outting in it, and it was pretty good, I still need my lower font brace to help stiffen things up but i was just keeping up with a 2l 8v engined mk2 on the straights and I was faster round the bends, since then Ive reset the mixture, vented the breather to atmos and im fitting a new manifold soon, so i should be a fair bit quicker next time out.

Theres still lots more I want to do, plastic windows, light wieght bonnet, new larger servo and master cylinder (the brakes seem pretty good on the track when hot even on the 239mm discs, but on the road they dont seem to good….but im reluctant to go to larger diameter if i can help it as its more unspring wieght)

Im trying to do this on a budget though as well, with out chucking money at it left right and centre, up to now ive spent:

Car ?2k
Exhaust ?180 iirc
KN filter ?35
GTi splitter ?35
Cam ?160
roll cage ?100
Track wheels ?95
Hoses ?80 all in
Cold air feed ?25
Gauges ?65
Seat subframes ?120

Extras like oil and filters to finish the engine run in, and odd and sods like the indicators ~?200 i guess….The seats and harnesses were taken straight out of my old play thing and put in this as they were only a few months old.

Im trying to do this for less than i sold my last play thing for which was ?3500, its already faster round donny than the mini so im already part way there.
