M.O.T. suspension fail

I need to replace the front shocks to pass my m.o.t. The previous owner has lowered the car with coilovers. I've no idea what make and can't see anything on the shocks that have been removed to help. So I've got 2 questions, will any coilover shocks fit? and second where can I get them? I've had a look online but all I can find are complete lowering kits which obviously I don't need. Sorry if these are stupid questions but I'm struggling.

Go on e-bay loads of sets available. Most are adjustable so you can set them up to hopefully be like the ones you have now.

There is a guy selling a set on here at the moment, not sure if its a full set or just fronts or backs and not sure if yours is a gti but if they are right the price is good.

is its because they dont have helper springs so the main spring is loose when they are jacked up?

Don't know to be honest. The m.o.t. guy just said they were providing negligible dampening. It's annoying because there are no brand names or part numbers anywhere to use to source replacements so It looks like I'll have to buy a completely new set.

I've emailed someone on here who has a set for sale, hopefully they still have them.

I've only ever seen coilovers as complete units, but I'd think the more well known manufacturers might supply individual replacement parts eg a damper, but you'd need to look at their own website or approach them directly. I doubt the cheaper end of the market suppliers are interested in this, and would just want to sell you another set. They're so cheap nowadays anyway, not sure if its worth the hassle replacing an individual damper rather than the whole unit, also bearing in mind its probably seized by now too.

Excellent I'll have a look. On the plus side, the ride has been a bit harsh recently, maybe once the new shocks are in I'll be head butting the roof a bit less.

If they are low then it will still be very harsh!

After reading up about it I'm going to ditch the coilovers and get a decent spring and shocks set up.

Everything the previous owner has done to the car has been at best, the cheapest option, at worst, a complete botch and I can't see any reason why the coilovers that are on would be any different. I haven't got the £5/600 spare to spend on a decent set and it seems like £250 will get me a pretty good spring and shocks set up. I'm thinking this one…

Is it not that they're wound down too much? My mot man wasn't happy with mine as I'd wound em all the way down so that when he had it on the ramps the springs were just flapping about.

I wound them up to a sensible height and he was happy.

No, the dampners have completely gone, got a new set of AP springs and shocks on their way.

if there is play in the damper shaft then it may be an easy fix allot of thes coilovers are a normal damper inside an alloy body ie. the threaded part that adjust ride height that have a very large nut at the top of the body that tightens down on the damper they can com loose creating play and knocking they need removing bit of lock tight do um up and good as new think u need to pop a cap off the top of the bodie to get to the nut
