furthest i've ever been in a mk1 Golf with a 1.3 / 4 speed was Hull to Portsmouth
Cost me a lot in petrol cos it did around 250 to a tank of juice
..
When my mk3 Polo was 1.3 single point injection & 5 speed it used to do nearly 400 miles to a tank
so…….in the long run, you maybe better off going in another car

My 1.6 GTI made Prague and back via Austria and the Alps, and I don't see why yours would let you down if it's reliable enough over here.
I took a decent toolkit, an atlas, and got some European breakdown cover. Think that was pretty much it…

i took my 1.3 from central scotland to inters, took 9 hrs there due to trafic but sat at 85 almost all the way home in 6 hours,i came from birmingham home in a mk1 i picked up,1.1 4speed and we took a screwdriver(reversable vag issue off course)and a bottle of oil which we never used, usually easy roadside fixes in a mk1 as long as its running semi decent, its an old car with a small engine so understand its limitations, cruise and have fun
