leaving the mk1 for 12 months

Hi all,

it pains me to write this, but i will be off travelling for 12 months come January (yay)
Laughing but i'll have to leave my mk1 in the garage for a whole year (boo!)

I've got a couple of questions that i was wondering if people could help with

1. Where can I get a good dust cover for the mk1 (i take it i should cover it?)
2. What should i do to the car before i leave it there? i am gettign a mate to start it up every 2 weeks or so and give it a boot about - but is that enough? should i do more? oil/plugs?/battery?(':dontknow:')

many thanks guys.

and sorry if this post is in the wrong place.

thanks

will

You may also want to remove all fuel from the tank because after a few months petrol goes off! I service and repair lawnmowers at work and we always drain the fuel for the winter! It should work the same for cars, it will take longer for the fuel to go off cos there is more of it!

Make sure the carpets and seats aren't damp before putting her away in the garage, otherwise you might find a lot of mildew growing when you get back, leave the windows cracked open to let the air circulate.  Handbrake left off for sure, I wouldn't drain the fuel especially if your friend is going to start her up for you every couple of weeks, which would also leave it O.K for keeping the battery connected.  As she is being stored in the garage, you could use a bed blanket as a dust cover, the battery should be fine

Get a tub of Poorboys Natty paste and the poorboys ex-p sealant slap a couple of coats of the sealant on then layer up the paste to your liking, (taking each coat of inbetween like) slip yer cover over and enjoy the trip. I did that on my sis's bf's car before they went of on there travels…..they were away for 18 months, pulled the car out of the garage, pulled the cover of, blasted what dust was on and just for the hell of it slapped another coat of the natty on and the car was mint again

6. leaving petrol int he tank (so she can be wizzed about ever few weeks) this will also stop teh tank from rusting!! i would fill it up!,

when matey drives make sure its propper warm every time, so a 15 20 min drive so teh oil is propper warm ( this will alow teh water ( condinsation) to burn off) also make sure he puts it back dry!!

make sure its got good anti freeze in it!!!! dont want it freezin up over teh winter
