I'm pretty sure if a car is sorn then it's tires can't touch public highway ie driven, parked or towed

x3, only legal on a trailer. In theory that includes loading and unloading it too, but in practice a short trip of 40 yards or so out of a drive and onto a trailer is usually done.

Watching a cop programme on tv the other day and the police pulled a car for having no tax or mot.

The guy explained to the copper that the car was sorn and he was on his way to an mot station to get his mot ect.

The copper checked this out and finally let him on his way.

Then he turned to the camera as they do, to say why the guy got pulled and that he was ok to drive the car to the mot station as long as it WAS booked in.

But personally I aint got a clue

Don't forget to apply for the SORN again once you own it and the V5 is in your name. SORN entitlement DOES NOT transfer with a change of ownership!

That last statement is absolutely correct as I understand it, that's what I am going to do to get my car in for an MOT.

Remember you need insurance as well to do this.

Assuming it passes MOT you can only drive it home.

You must purchase Car Tax before you can drive it again. best to do at Post Office with Insurance and MOT Certificate at hand.

If it fails, I assume you can only drive it home, assuming it has not been classed as unsafe by the garage, you have two weeks to put it through MOT again on a retest.

Remember to re-book another appointment in case stopped by the police.

Automatic numberplate recognition is everywhere nowadays.

Not sure if Im repeating what others are saying but Im in the trade and deal with this all the time.

1. If you booked in for an MOT you will need to have car insurance to get there.

2. If you fail your MOT its classed as not road worthy at that point. So…if you have insurnce and drive it home as an MOT failure, your insurance will be invalid.

3. If your towing the car and its wheels are on the road you will need to have Tax, insurance and MOT. Unless you are booked in for an MOT then you will only need  insurance and the above will still apply.

I thought the drive wheels had to be off the road so you could tow on a dolly but not on a bar. or a trailer. Personally I would not drive if the car has been sitting for a long time.

Dollys only lift the front wheels though….and technically, a dolly is a trailer in itself, plus the car as another trailer meaning you're towing 2 trailers, which imposes a 20mph/40mph speed limit on you. They're only for recovery, not transportation. And the rearmost bit remains unbraked etc etc…

Car trailer is the best way anyway, it saves having to turn the car wheels. I remember being asked to transport a car once, and one of the rear drums had seized. I was able to drag it out using a heavy 4x4 and then chock the trailer wheels with bricks, and drag it onto the trailer, all the while the tyre scrubbing etc. Fun.

thanks for all your replies, i rang my local police today and they said that all 4 wheels must be off the ground so a flat bed or traier must be used if the car is SORN, so there you go thatll teach me for not checking before buying a light board and a tow pole!
