Is this of interest to anyone?? PICS UP.
Hi guys, I'm more of a MKII man but I have just had a pure by chance incident with a customer.
I work for a dealer and at present we are getting alot of trash coming through the doors by way of this scrapage scheme.
However I have just had a gentleman with a W plate 1983 MKI 1.3 LS 103,000 miler come in. The car has been in the same family from new with his father owning it and then his daughter and now him. It is a 5dr, has the chrome bumpers, chrome window trim, chrome door trim, beige checkered interior, original wheels that are immaculate and the car itself has not dents or scuffs not even a scratch on it. It is a plastic bumper model and not the earlier metal bumper model it also has the larger rear lights so its not an early model. I found 2 tiny patches of rust one under a rear arch and one underneath it but no bigger than a 5p. The only part that isn't still original is the radio which he no longer has.
Guys and Girls what I need to know is what would this car be worth. It is pretty much in concourse condition with the drivers seat cushion sagging slightly and the engine needing the standard sprucing up.
I need help with this as otherwise it may well get scrapped.
Cheers Andy

Eck if you haven't heard about the scrapage scheme it means that if he trades the car in he will get ?2000 against a new car and then the car goes to be crushed.

If anyone is seriously interested I have the owners details.

This is an example, if ever one was needed, that the club needs to provide an accurate and up-to-date price guide. I believe its being discussed by members at the moment, whether to take it off the home page. But for now its still there.

it's not worth 2 grand. which is a shame. as it will be crushed for the sake of wanting a new shiny toy.

Its not a case of me giving the guy a price for the car I came on here to see if someone (being MKI enthusiasts) might be interested in a car of this ilk.

Surely for the current owner, the question is "is anyone interested in buying it for >?2000"?

someone will be. but it's still not worth 2 grand. so the guy will no dowt see the pound signs and smush it goes. what a wonderful government we have to come up with this idea for getting rid of history. next thing you'll be getting 2 grand for your grandma if you buy a new one.

Paul the car has been in the guys family from new. He has a BMW coupe he uses at weekends etc and he uses the golf during the week. I'm pretty sure if a sensible offer was made he'd listen as he didn't really want to sell the car and certainly doesn't really want to see it scraped. I had a chat and told him there was no way he could scrap something in that condition. I value cars al day every day and this car is an extremely tidy example for any car especially one thats 27 years old.

Can the guy not swap any car (of the required age), this way someone could swap the car with another banger and bung the gent a few quid!!
Would the guy still get a 2k discount on another vehicle? If so then someone could be in for a bit of dealing.

He has to have owned the car for 12 months. So no.

What do you value it at then, because the price guide was written 4 years ago? The fact that its too good to scrap, is not a reason for it not to be scrapped, unfortunately (as I understand things) one of the conditions of eligibility for the ?2000 is that the vehicle is scrapped, not resold. Hence the scheme doesn't discriminate, between ?100 bangers and ?1999 classics which could also be traded in. Of course, the type of person who can afford to buy a new car is also the kind of person who's probably be more likely to have a ?1999 classic to trade in, rather than the ?100 banger. This was pointed out quite extensively to the government before it introduced the scheme but they wanted the "points scoring" from the (dubious) environmental benefit of doing this.
As far as the world at large losing a rare car, its not particularly rare as such, although it is rare to find one in such good condition as the pics suggest. Unfortunately this doesn't help that much with value and there tends to be a "ceiling" on the prices of good condition non-GTI cars, which as stated is probably below ?2000. Its a recession, after all!

How about yourself offering a p/x price of ?2000 and offering it for resale on here?

It must be scrapped if it enters the scheme. I am guessing the requirement is a "certificate of destruction" issued by a scrappy/dismantler, therefore meaning it can never be reregistered for the road.
