Is This a Scam?

Ive agrred to swpa my cabby for a 83 gti but the man im swapping with is only going to sell mine on so would prefer cash.

I got this email yesterday from someone else…….

"Hello  pinacle, we have concluded, making the payment
Thanks for your email and update on the bottom price( £2,100),it was
accepted by my clientand he  has directed us to issue payment to you. I
would need your assurance that the property whose payment we would start
processing,is in a good condition as the only view our client had of the
vehicle was on the internet and this purchase is hinged on his personal
judgement of what the property's state and output would be like,in
comparison to models of its category. However,he made out a certified
cashiers check of( £6,100) before he travelled for a conference, for a
previous vehicle and its shipment charges etc,but it wasunfortunately
sold. The amount on the check he deposited for the vehicle is bigger than
what should be paid to you now, so the check is now meant for the total
expenses which includes the purchase of your vehicle ,its pick up from its
present location and the shipping charges/other necessary shipping
arrangements. However he has instructed us to bikery on with this
transaction. So when payment gets to you, you're required to deduct the
cost of your vehicle ( £2,100) and send the balance of( £4,000) to my client
shipping agent to enable him offsett shipping charges/arrangements. Once
the transaction is concluded, My client shipping agent will be coming for
the pick up of the vehicle from its present location, on an access to a
prepaid shipper for shipment, and also conclude other necessary shipping
arrangements. So you dont have to bother yourself about the pick up and
shipping rrangements, while title papers and other necessary documets will
be sent by you via fedex courier . Please Confirm this and provide (1)
NAME (2) CONTACT ADDRESS AND CONTACT PHONE NUMBER(s) for check payment to
be delivered to you via regular mail immediately , please remove the add
of the vehicle from the internet to avoid complications from other buyers"

What you make of that?

Looks like money laundering at the very least to me..?

Without doubt a scam. The construction and spelling of the email give it away. No legitimate company would put their name to something so poor as it would result in it's legitimacy being questioned. It is however a little different from the usual 'send us your bank details and we'll deposit the full asking price' scam so they can clean you out of your hard earned. This looks like they want your details so they can come and relieve you of the vehicle at your hame address  8O Can't beat the personal touch eh?? I say this because they've aked for name, address and contact number. This way they know where the car is likely to be, watch the house / car and when they see you go out they ring a few minutes later to be told you're out. Now they remove car but if anyone questions it they have your name so they blag 'Yeah, I've bought it off Jody . . . . . . . . .etc etc.' May be worth visiting local nick to tell them, they could get a collar out of this.

 :D

I should be in CID . . . . . . . . . . . . . or a criminal
DISCLAIMER : At no point am I suggesting there's a thin line between the above two vocations

Was this the guy who's also swapping for a hatchback? If so, be very aware - it might be ringed/stolen etc. You don't want to swap a legitimate car (and sign over the V5) for a stolen car, do you?

If its a swap no payment needs to involved, so at least that's one barrier out the way, although obviously swapping for a worse or dodgy car is always a possibility.

Paul, it states on first post from someone else not the person the deal's agreed with. Someone swinging the lead without doubt. Unfortunately asking for home address implies they may pay a visit swinging a baseball back in exchange for the keys.  8O

why do scammers drone on and on in these communications. short and to the point might catch some people out, but this extrapolated nonsense means nothing.
I am therefore willing to be the agent/go between for the buyer. if you deposit funds into my…

That's the thing Sean, they're not asking for bank details it's home address and contact number, dodgy in the extreme. Ooooh I like your car but don't fancy parting with any cash for it.

Agreed, textbook scam stuff, I sold a banger of a Fiesta on autotrader and had similarly worded responses, to the point they were actually funny, some of the lying mugu's cant even be bothered to change the email to suit the situation.

Sold SWMBO's wee fiesta via autotrader over a week ago and deleted the ad, my phone number and my email addy from the website and im still getting a vast amount of emails/phonecalls. The phonecalls I dont mind, its usually genuine punters and a simple "I'm sorry its sold" suffices, but the amount of attempted scammers is unbelievable via email, where they are finding the info i have no Idea, i guess that a spider rips the content from autotrader and replicates it on other sites.

Heres a selection, do you think anyone falls for it? Bear in mind its a £500 banger!
