You're posting on a Saturday morning! Unlikely to get the same response as posting on a weekday when everyone is checking from work.

I didn't know there were such things as cabby 1.8glis - thought they were all GTis apart from mine here in France, which is a 1.8gli. Could it be one that was imported on a B plate?

Pretty sure it was August '83 the GLi was dropped in favour of the GTi

If the cabby buying guide is to be believed, they were produced until 1984 and some were sold in 1985, so it could be on a B plate.

Is it just the fact that the L was changed to a T and why was this?

These kind of questions will hopefully
but sorted once and for all soon.

I'm working on a project with VW UK so we'll all have answers from print.

reg doesn't really mean anything.

i've seen an early skoda estelle (the first shape) on an m plate.

(it was while surfing the tinternet looking for a picture of it i found the car in my other post)

it was said that the car was used a a promotion car in a showroom and when it was finally put on the road the DVLA gave it an "M" reg,

According to a few insurance companies there where Tin Top GLi's made up to 1985?
The GLI soft top was stopped in 1984 according to their books. However like some have said some if not sold in 84 can linger on in the warehouse until say 1985. I bought a motorbike once where they stopped the model in 1998 and yet I bought it on next year?s plate. I think if the colour is not a popular one this can happen  or off coarse a display model perhaps.

GLi as a trim level was only offered on Mk1 Golf convertible, Jetta and Scirocco, never the hatchback in the UK.
