Is it just me..

or does anyone else get to the stage when they just want to sell their mk1 because of constant problems?!
Everytime its fixed something else goes wrong. Is it just my car or not?!

I do have stacks of problems with my Mk1 but I never think about selling him (he might hear me).!!!!!!

But seriously I just see it as a personal challenge with mine, he's a bit of a pain in the arse at times but hey who cares he's brilliant.  Think of why you bought it in the first place….

dude, even modern cars break, at least with the mk1 everything is mechanical and not computer controlled and you've got a fiting chance at fixing yourself, unless you want to spend ?80/hour at main dealer for a modern car.

stick with it, you'll only regret selling

I think about this all the time. Especially when I take something off and cant get it back on. I really do hate my car at times, but after a faultless drive I love it again.

My 8v hasn't gone wrong since it's restoration a few years ago except for a chicken hitting it at 80 mph !

Have faith it's old and needs some care and attention , but do it right first time and it will be worth it .

Depends where you begin.

Mind you, I am a bit excessive - heard a squeak - thought it might be the bearing on the alternator or the water pump -  new alternator, belts, water pump, thermostat, thermostat housing, seals & hoses -  but no -  2 second spray of silicon lubricant of the offside engine mount and problem solved. (use all the bits later) …. slight leak in the exhaust? new system front to back.. slight rumble in front end? new wheel bearings, drive shafts, universals, boots, gaiters, clamps … brake pads need replacing? - new discs, pads, calipers, fluid, braided hoses.

The vehicle has had your amount of attention lavished on it over the years. I'm only the second owner - the first being completely fastidious and provided a fully serviced vehicle - on the button at every interval - so I guess it shows at the end of the day.  You have the slightly unfortunate problem of now having to chase down years of past inattention - must drive you nuts.

Catchya.

half the reason we like our golfs is because they have character they break when you least expect it.

mine has a mind of its own if so much as talk about driving another car or selling it she seems to not wanna work soon after

My golf is just a sunday and sunny day car, so it need not be 100% reliable all the time, I have a new car to go to work in, which is nice.

BUT new cars are not always fun, they still have problems and you may not need to get dirty yourself but it is still a pain dropping it off picking it up and as for servicing. Costs a bomb for some little herbert who know a lot less than me about cars to change the oil.

Stick with it, if you change enough bits it will be a new car anyway

You do eventually reach a situation where you've replaced many parts, and spent a hill of money on it - and you've ended up with a reliable car. I bought mine (my black one) as a ?500 eBay bargain, spent tons on all aspects of the car and now its very reliable. Thing is, I've now had it a couple of years and not bodged any aspects of repair or maintenance.

So there is light at the end of the tunnel!

Whats up Andy??
whats wrong with the car?

Mate if you saw the car when I originally got it, you would not believe the state of it!!

It had been stood for 7 years under a tree, it took me a year just to get it back on the road, in that time I had times when I thought, "Im just chucking money into a bottomless hole, but when I eventually got her back on the road it was lovley, and made it all worth it!!

Like someone said before, ALL cars break down at times, more so older cars, for example my current GTI has soooo many things wrong with it:

Tracking needs doing
camber needs adjusting
rear shocks are shot
leaking petrol from one of the braided hoses(very dangerous!!)
exhuast keeps blowing no matter how many times I fix it!!:banghead:
fuel gauge not working
heater valve needs replacing
rear window demister not working
number plate lights not working(been pulled over twice 4 it!!!)

oh and they are just mechanical bits then there is the body work!!!

Front panel needs replacing
rear panel needs serious replacment (I have a mobile lake in the boot)
both rear arches need replacing
both rears of sills need work
spare wheel well needs welding
boot floor has 2 holes in it
drivers door is sagging…

ok im getting depressed now
why am I doing this again?????

Im seriously still on the look out for a nice comfortable big bumpered Mk2
Jetta GL with all the creature comforts, so I can whack the GTI in the garage and repair it properly, but money is tight and so is room!!

So chin up matey cant be that bad…..can it?????

I f you need help on doing any work give us a shout, and If I can I'll give you a hand??

Frank

Let me just remind you how good your car looks
