Info on my cabby

I have a 1980 1.6GLi cabby.
I believe they started making them in this country in January 1980 and mine was registered in April 1980.
I have since noticed subtle differences between mine and other cabbys, such as the wipers park the opposite way round to any other (and Crazy Quiffs have told me that is not possible!!).
Weve been thinking now that mine is so early that it is an imported left hand drive shell (could be a rabbit shell) that has been converted inside to right hand drive.
Is this possible and is there any way of finding out how early mine realy is?
I deal more in classic minis, and this is my first golf. I know how to find out this information for Minis, but not sure if it is possible for golfs.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Our Series 1 GLi - definitely a UK-supplied car - had wipers that parked the wrong way. It wasn't uncommon; Passats also did it; B2s all have LHD wipers even in RHD markets as far as I can tell. Ours was ORR 690W and other subtle differences included the conical S1 dials and dash, the latchless belts (from memory) and a Wolfsburg wheel with metal spokes and a deep horn push. I can't remember when it was registered, but I know it threw me off when looking at other Mk 1 Golfs and finding they had a different dashboard.
