Get a mk1!!!!!!!!!!!

There thats my advice.

yes some do get bigger engines put in them but thats the same for mk2's as well. there is plenty of mk1's with 1.1 or 1.3 engines in them. keep looking!!

Golf mk1 1983 1.3 (it ran away)

Use the buyer guide on the homepage when looking at them.

I have had a mk2, a mk3 and a mk4 Golf GTi before buying my mk1 cabby. By far the most enjoyable car out of the lot to drive. :)

If you can hold out, and get the mk1 you want you'll be happy if you get something else, you'll regret it. Dont listen to other people, get what YOU want to drive and own.

LOL

Be comfortable with what you're buying… if we're honest mk1's can be expensive for genuine parts but mechanically you can still get most things and they're straight forward to work on… plus everyone here will help you out if you get stuck and need advice.

If you are looking for budget motoring, a smaller engined Mk1 or Mk2 Golf makes alot of sense.

You can make them look very nice with not much expense and you can keep them on the road for peanuts.

All you've got to make sure is you buy the best bodyshell you can find.  Don't worry too much about mechanical stuff as it's all very cheap and easy to fettle.

If you get say an 1100 Mk1 Golf and the worst happens mechanically (ie. whole engine dies), you can pull the engine straight out of a Mk2 Polo 1.3 and drop it in.  Even if you have to buy a whole Polo just for the engine, you'll still have change out of ?100.

Brake parts are cheap, as is suspension and running gear.  You'll find the likes of Euro Car Parts and GSF very useful if you are running an old VW.

If I were you, I'd try and find a clean Mk1 Golf Driver 1.3.  They have pretty much all of the GTI trim as standard so they look the part without having to do much to them, they are pretty cheap on insurance, fuel consumptions pretty good too and they are in the cheap tax bracket.

Usually the more you spend on the car, the less you have to spend on maintenance but this isn't always true (especially with ebay).  Best bet is to find someone (on here maybe) who is local to you can knows VW's well who will happily look at any potential purchase and let you know if it needs any work or not.

If you are worried about the age of the cars you'd be looking at, you could look for a Mk1 Golf Citi 1.3 or 1.4 as these are still being made or go for a convertable (these were made up until around '93 ish).

Good advice Steve… I agree, body shell is the most important thing…. after 25 years they all have some issues… so pick up one that's tidy…

Not always but if it's tidy and relatively free of rust then it's likely it's been looked after… mechanicals are easier to fix

Sound advice from Steve there.

I had a 1.3 driver as my first car, tho it took over a year of looking to find the  right one It was great, taught me a lot about driving, (ie, not very powerful brakes!) no power steering etc, and I kept it on the road for little money, and leanrt along the way as I fixed different problems. I still have it now, although without the 1.3, but thats becuase I afford the insurance, (just  )

So, Do it :D

Funny that…

I've still got my Mk1 Driver shell too, currently undergoing a heart transplant with a BR Motorsport flavour! lol

I'll probaly never get rid of my Driver, so much time and effort put into that car 8O

Currently fitting fully rebuilt KR lump, with lightened flywheel, overbore to somewhere nearer 1900, and a four branch at the mo.

At this rate there won't be many drivers left with their 1.1 / 1.3 left.
