i came close to going to see this car, but its like over 3 hours away. Was bit put off by the amount of money that he orriginally wanted for it and also by the person that went to see it before me.

Is the electric sunroof really factory option,

sounds in slighlty worse nik than my 1980 series one out of a field.

took three weeks to get mine on the road but will soon be back of the road for resto work.

it got good history (i got none) sunroof is elevctric and its got air con.  i paid ?100 for my car and needs less work.  if it was mot'd and needed work i think it may be worth it but a bit pricey never the less

its a nice car and i still love it

It is so hard to make judgements on a car that i am guessing none of us have seen, what put me off was looking at the guide price for one of these ( i no its only a guide ) and then looking at what he wanted orriginally (over 2k). I spoke to him on the phone, said it only had surface rust on it at 1st, so i was going to go see it. But some one else on here went to view it before me, so i asked his views. What he told me was slightly different to what seller advised. Spoke to seller again then said sunroof areas look to have been filled etc etc.

But having said all that, how many of these are really left, with this sort of mileage aswell which can be backed up. I mean the cars over 25 years old so is gonna need full resto anyway. Hope someone on here buys it and restores it to former glory.

i know it's easy to say as i wouldn't know how much work is involved but i thought we were all of the same opinion, to keep as many of these cars on the road. if we all thought of how much weve spent or need to spend then mk1's would be extinct( shudder at the thought 8O ).
i just think this car should have someone to love it again. :)

Its funny how there's a definite kind of car which attracts a lot of interest, but mainly from people who can't actually come up with the money the seller is asking for, for the car. So there's an inflated 'perception' of their values. The vans are the same. I guess its all down to the rarity of the car, but to the average Joe Public, they wouldn't know the difference between a S1 GTI and a S2 GTI; or the significance of the Golf van. Its really only within enthusiast circles where they're recognised for what they are. And enthusiasts never like spending over the odds!

That isn't a factory fit sunroof - there was no electric sunroof available on mk1 GTI's. Also it's not even a VW sunroof - look at the size of it, you could seat 4 for dinner around that

VW only fitted one style of steel sunroof to the mk1, like this….

Also I know VW made air-con for US Rabbits, but was this ever a factory fit/option on European cars and what's going on with the centre consol? Doesn't look original :dontknow:

i think he`s asking that sort of money due to the fact that its complete and yes it needs a full restoration but nearly all the core parts are there. How many series one gti`s have been for sale in the last few years..? not many i guess, someone with the right skills could get a good deal on that car and make it very nice.

It deserves to be saved and restored there are not many around.

I wholly agree its a good base for a full resto and indeed is one of the more desirable early models worth saving, (i had one exactly the same a few years back) but i paid ?80 for mine out of a field in Westerham!!! and looking at this car its not in any better condition!! if something needs restoring or is basicly a non runner/useable car without an mot then the justification on asking driveable car money is clearly based on money/greed and the seller hooking an enthusiast into it!

but as said no enthusiast is gonna give that money because they know whats involved ? wise and time and effort to restore a car of this type, the price needs to reflect its potential NOT what the seller paid for it or what it would be worth if it were an mot`d running daily driven car

That said its not mine   so the owner asks what they want for it, if they get it then good on them, personally i wouldnt pay anymore than ?1000 for it as most of what you see is gonna need to be replaced and or repaired/painted and its end value isnt gonna reflect what it would cost to do, but the end product once restored would be a stunning little car if done correctly so physical value isnt really the issue but anyone attempting it should think of a budget then double it! as that what it usually costs for resto!
