I don't understand!

OK I usually have le castelletes on my mk1 golf they are highly polished so with it being winter i have purshased some winter wheels I know the offset was different so i also bought 10mm spacers all round, I started with the rear right wheel then rear left then front left no worrries got to drivers front and it catched on my coilover??!!! why? thought may be a dodgy wheel swopped it over still catches!???  :banghead:  any suggestions on what i can do? or how i can rectify it? is the camber adjuster bolt worth trying? HELP!!

Help always appriciated Regards Chris

Post up the ET values from both sets of wheels and the tyre sizes for each and someone will be able to help you.
Just make it clear which is the original ET and tyres size, and what you are trying to fit now.
Cheers

original tyre size 15" 195 50 6j offset 35mm

New wheels 15" 195 45 6j with a 10mm spacer 25mm offset

I just dont understand it my old ones didnt rub at all!!!!

odd. on paper that should be a direct swap.

maybe the new tires sidewall bulges out a bit further? IDK

can you get the wheel mounted then let the car down to see if the rub persists once the suspension is loaded?

Well when the car is jacked up its fine and on the ground just a wiggle of the steering wheel when driving and you hear it  touching the spring 'bong bong bong' as the coil spins. What do you recon 1mm shim?
   is that safe?
It literally must just a very small amount!

what is the next size spacer? i wonder if you can exchange your 10mm for something along the lines of 12 or 15mm; thats what i would do.

thats assuming of course that you have 2-5mm to spare at the outside of the wheel; and you should.

sorry to hear about your luck.

Ok development! I put on my 10mm and had a 2mm lying around! popped my wheel on looked behind and a 1mm gap as a spin the wheel the gap increases to a 2mm gap and then closes up enough to scrub!!! dodgy wheel/tyre maybe?   Ok got wheel off tyre is wrecked lol gouged a nice ring in it only on onee half thou seems suspiciuos!!

Et value: ???? cant see it sorry

Chris
Have you checked the clearance of your original wheels. I know they didn't rub (have you checked the inner edge of the tyre?) but if they too were only within 2mm, this could be dangerous. the whole system will flexx more than that under heavy cornering.

Seems a little strange as the bigger the offset number, the closer the tyres will be to the suspension.

Hope you find a suitable fix.

Well i just wacked one on ie my original and there is a 2-3mm i can get my head round it my car is very low as low as it can be really on coilovers so the movement in the suspension is minimal if any, I know the whole system flexes but it has never touched on my coil if it hits anywhere under harsh cornering it the arches thats clips but that only with a car full and it just skims it! it must be the wheels!!??  :?

are you sure the new wheels are 6j, or 6" wide?

check out this site for some technical stuff and measurement calculators:

he covers several topics that are right up your alley at this point.

Sounds like your car is simply too low to run this width of wheel, and the fact that it didn't rub with the original ones on is more luck than judgement. There is probably a difference in the shape of the tyre which means the new ones rub somewhere, no matter what spacers are used etc.

Agree with Paul most probaly too low for wheels.

it should be farther away from the suspension unless the wheel or tire is a new width.

at this point it could also be camber. can you see any positive or negative camber on the fronts?

Hmmmm no negative camber at all took it to kwik fit and the camber is spot on! on paper apart from tyre profile they should fit exactly the same any way while i was at kwik fit i asked em to check the wheel and the tyre is buckled! so no luck or judgement involved simple solution to fit the problem but good website thanks for all your help.

great! at least it was a fairly simple solution, meaning your car wasnt broke, your tire was!

could it be something as simple as the bottom/top bolt/s having a small amount of play in when loose and the drivers side got bolted up to with the coil pulled towards the ouside fo the car and the passenger side got bolted up being pushed into the car, or is this not possible?
