how to tell if its a karmann?

as above really, im really new into the old golf owners scene, picked myself up a 1987 gti cabriolet but a couple people have asked if its a karmann as it looks like it... i cant upload pics at moment so just wondering if there was any obvious tell tale signs to show its a karmann or not? thanks. (ps it has no karmann badges... all badges were taken off untill i bought it and put original badges back on)

No, there's no such thing as a special edition called a Karmann, but there are special editions of the cabriolet such as the Christmas cabriolet, Atienne Eigner, Rivage, Sportline etc etc

All cabriolets had the Karmann badges on the wings from the factory. It's a common mistake to make though thinking it's a special edition, the same mistake happens with VW Corrados, they were also all produced by Karmann, for VW, and all had Karmann badges on the centre console.

there were a few companies in the 80's who would hacksaw the roof off any car and cover the gap with rag n call it a convertable. long since all dead i hope!!

I seem to remember a Ford Fiesta Mk1 XR-2 Cabrio in the 80's, don't know which fool built it tho!!

Crayford built a few nice convertables in the 60's (Mk2 Cortina etc) but they're very rare sought after cars now.

There was also a Vauxhall Nova modification.
There used to be a company at long Eaton called Nova Sport who had a couple of them, not sure if they did the actual conversion though.
