how popular are mk1 golfs becoming?

:D  hi everyone, i currently have 2 mk1 golfs on my drive 1 cabs which i bought for spares [but was too good to break so i sold it to my brother in law] and my beloved mk1 gti tin top which im doing a full resto on, i rent a house on quite a posh ish road so as you can imagine i get a few looks when im out working on it ha ha! but ive recently became friends with 2 seperate blokes that also have mk1 golfs and they both live a stones throw from me, but ive also noticed another 5!! mk1 golfs that live within a 2 to 3 mile radius of me, just thought id say really as i think its great to see such timeless classics on the road! :)

I agree & they might be creating a negative image for the car

i think its good that younger people are getting into them[if they are!], it will allow them to learn about cars that are easy to work on and fun to drive, plus turn heads, which in my opinion is better than driving saxos, corsas and fiestas and such like and learning nothing about them…

They never went through an unpopular phase, really. There will always be a wide variety of people who are fans/owners. Luckily they are not too costly to get into, so this attracts the younger motorist too.

judging by the last 2 shows i have been to they are becoming very popular.as are polo coupe's and mk1 polos.
used to be you'd have to walk round a show hunting for mk1's (ok a bit of exagiration) now they're every where. big test will be tatton this year. a show that i haven't been to for 3 years. i'f theres lots of mk1's there (and not just on the owners club stand) then i'd say yes they are becoming more popular.

i think its more that the grows popularity on the show scene has increased

2-3 years ago, it was more mk2,3,4 golfs witht he odd mk1 dotted about

As novocaine said, its now mk1 golfs everywhere at shows, plus the mk1 Polo also geting more popular - i think its trends that are changing - give it another couple of years and any Very early VAG cars, mk1 polo's throught o mk1 passats, early audi 50's, 80's and 100's will soon be popping up more and more…

Not sure, on the basis that mine was the only mk1 at a recent classic car show amongst thousands of other cars.

They do seem popular with the lads, earlier this week I went into a local motor factors for a small part for my car,,,when the lad came back with it, he refused payment as a mk1 Gti was a proper car…a nice gesture and obviously will return there when I need more expensive parts.

were we not all young drivers once??

couldnt agree more mate, the mk1 golf was built to compete with rival manufactuers of the day so was probably aimed more at the younger driver anyway in its day!

the younger drivers then could not afford the insurance on a gti, they had to buy the bottom of the range with small engines. It was only the yuppies that could afford to buy and run a gti.

Today is no different, i would of thought that the majority of gti owners are middle aged.

which is my point

Its becoming a more scene car than a classic car - not a problem, just its focus is switching from the traditional classic car shows to the VW shows - still the same number of them about, but in different ways.. Moreare getting modified tho

Lawsy, I think you are right.....not only was my car the only mk1 at the classic car show...it is modified too!...oh the shame!!!
