how old is it

Hi all, got myself a mk1 gti. Its been a stage rally car since the early nineties. Origonally imported from Germany, its LHD, logbook shows first registration date as 82.Is there anywhere I could get a definitive build date as if it were built in 81 it would be eligible for many more historic events. Any suggestions appreciated. Peter.

Year code on chassis number is a good bet. Firstly how long's your chassis number, 10 digits or 17? I can't remember which digit is the year code off the top of my head but if you give us the chassis number except for the last 6 digits or so, will be able to tell.

PM me the chassis number and I will give you the build date

If its just showing 6 digits on the V5 then its incomplete. Look on the car for the definitive VIN number. It should be on a plate on the slam panel. Also its stamped onto the scuttle panel (if there is a plastic tray, then its underneath the transparent window on it) or for pre 1980 cars, on the right suspension turret.

On a 17 digit chassis number, the 10th character is the year code:

WVWZZZ172CW425827

C = 1982 model year, which runs Aug 1981-July 1982

Thanks for that, how could I find the exact build date? I `m very into Volvos, and can find the exact day of build via Volvo global cust relations, would VW offer the same? If so who would  I  contact? Loads of questions I know, thanks anyway Peter.

I think Dubboy has more info and knows the chassis code ranges for each month of build; or its on ETKA, or something.
