HOW MANY MPG U GUYS GETTING? IS MINE A GUZZLA?

Hi i have a 1990 1.8 golf gti cab. As far as im aware no engine mods. I think its is using to much fuel the mpg gauge is reading 10-17 mpg and going by the amount im filling up i think its about right this is going really easy on her as well! this is my 1st petrol vw do you think i have a problem? what are you lot getting out of a gallon on average??

Cheers Rich

1800=35mpg

Driving style and or tuning/servicing of the engine are contributing factors.

Mpg guage do not believe what it is telling you .

   :)

If you 'rag' a MK1 GTI you will get 17 MPG !!

The best I've ever had was 53.6mpg over an 11 mile run at around 56mph, in warm weather on a general down hill gradient. Couldn't believe it!  8O

Generally on a 65-70mph run I get about 42/43mpg and aroun 39mph aroun town.

I find that the mechanical guage is fairly close to the MFA when you zero the MFA on a run and view the guage in comparison.

i had a decent runa  while back, averaged about 75-80 over a 200 mile trip, filled up at start, filled up later and worked out at 37 mpg which i was well chufed with, especially as a section was on erm, private roads…

see if this helps;

1.8 DX series / K-Jet fuel injecton /113,000 miles - original engine never touched:

Over 342 miles at an average speed of 52 mph / mixture of A & B roads plus motorway / used 39 litres of fuel:

Conversion: 4.54609 litres per gallon: 39 litres = 8.58 gallons.

342/8.58 = 39.86 miles/gallon (14.11 kilometres / litre.)

sounds like your MFA is incorrect, you need to check that the vacum pipes are ok and not split. I doubt you could ever get a standard 1.8 GTI down to 10 mpg unless you had a hole in your fuel tank.
If it was running rich enough to use that much fuel I doubt it would run at all.
You need to do a test using the above forumla, brim tank with your normal fuel, zero trip meter, then you run until almost all fuel used and fill up again, try and use the same pump at the same station, note how many litres you put in to brim again. I would suggest on both fills you stop at the first click of the pump that way by using the same pump when you return it should be as accurate as you are going to get in the real world.
then using your recorded mileage and your litres use you can work out the REAL mpg, not what the MFA is telling you, I would think that normal mixed driving would get anything from 28 to 42 and constant hard driving or track would see low 20s, but as I said never down as far as 10 or so. I have had MFAs which had read that kind of figure and they have ALWAYS been wrong and had a fault with the unit or pipe work.

Hope that helps

Mine averages about 35 mpg normally on a run and 25- 30 around town, 1.8 gti DX engine in a cabrio, standard original engine (apart from k&n panel filter) with 106k on the clock

Mind you :?  mine seemed a bit thirsty too and from ultimate Dubs 8O  i put ?60 of fuel in it for a 500 mile round trip, which i suppose with fuel prices at the moment, and i wasnt exactly going slow :D  some of the time :wink:  was not too bad,

but it was only ?20 less fuel than last year and i went in the VR6 :roll:
