How long will you keep your mk1............

Now here's a question for all you out there………

How long would you keep your mk1 for ? I have promised my son who is 8 right now and he can have my cabby when he is old enough to drive !!! Question is will it last that long, I hope it does for my sake given that it's 23yrs old now and when it comes to him it'll be 34 yrs old !!! I know that there are cars on the road right now 30+ but in time they get older and older. As for my tin top that in 10 yrs time will be 40 so will a mk1 last that long……..?

So will you give up on your cars or carry them on into old age we see plenty of vintage cars at shows its hard to believe that a mk1 could one day be classed as vintage.

Cheers, Dave.

given the choice i will keep my car on a permanent basis, hopefully in the near future (when she gets a job) should be able to afford a newer car and take the golf off the road and only use it for weekends and summer (2 weeks of the year lol)

My golf was/is my first car - bought it September 8th 2007.

It's outlasted any other car i've owned, and I now plan on giving it a proper restoration when funds and etc allow.

A policeman once offered to buy it from me when it was in a garage (there's a story, eh?) but I instantly refused him - maybe it's a rose-tinted spec's thing, but I just can't think what I would do without my mars red open chequebook.

I'm currently running at 10 years 4 months with the same cabby.

It's 28 years young. Gone from a scrapper to a fairly decent usable, reliable(ish) runner. There have been times when a sale has come close and pretty recently too!!  :banghead:

Will I keep it? Yes as long as the other half will indulge me and I can afford it.

Like Ginner, I've said that my 7 year old daughter can drive it so, fingers crossed!!

think im closeing in on ten years with mine i have good days and bad days with it but expect i wont part company with it unless i get some kinda amaseing offer… but at the moment im sat with

mk1 tintop
discovery offroader
sdi octavia (nurburgring mobile)
gixxer 600

i expect the sdi will be the first one to go but am toying with superchargeing it for a laugh. in all honesty apart from being different there would be no advantage over a tdi to undergoing the hassel. before i get that far though the discovery needs a few things done the mk1 may actualy be a runner soon (mid 20v)  and id like a 750 for next summer.

I've had mine for 2 years now and hopefully have it long term.

I plan to get both my sons mk1's as their first cars too and they are 15 and 7.

If I had space I would like a tintop GTI as well.

Can't see me ever wanting to sell it,I've waited ages to own one that I can drive,I love the comments it gets and the looks plus it's really cheap to run insurance wise and petrol as I only do a few miles a week in it, also i have loads of spares so i should be ok for most parts   i do want to take it off the road soon though to tart it up a bit

i`ve had mine just short of 3 weeks now.my plan was to buy a usable one (which seems to be the case, touch wood) and just use it for a year, then if i like it i can do stuff or if not i`ll sell it on. i`ve fancied one for a while so i had to `scratch the itch`
my son has also decided that he`d like to take possesion asap.
he`s still only 9

I've had mine for 27 years and it looks as if we're stuck with each other. When it was stolen I said I'd keep it if it ever came back and I did.  I had to extend the garage to accommodate it, spent a lot to bring it back to standard etc. That was 17 years ago. I've still got the Mk2  I bought to replace it so there's a sort of pattern emerging here.
I'll probably become too old and infirm to drive it or too doolally to care but hopefully that's (a few) years away.

We plan on keeping both of ours for life, my wife (89clipper) has expressed a preferance of being buried in hers when she dies, not sure about that. Might need air ride installed though to make it easier to get out of it when i am 80 :)

I've had mine just 8 Months but I wanted a Cabby for the last 25 years, so I've waited long enough.
Three people in that time have asked me if I want to sell it but they all got the short sharp answer "NO".

My Son is 14, now and again this summer I've have been teaching him to drive it.
He fell in love with it the first moment he saw it, so I promised him that one day it will be his!
God forbid anything should happen to me anytime soon but if it does it's his.

I could never sell it.
I'm finding hard enough excepting the fact that I have to take it off the road for the next 5 or 6 months.
The weather gets so cold here so it's not as if I can keep working on it or anything.

It's going to be a looooooooooooong hard winter for me no matter how bad or mild the weather gets!  :banghead:

Had my 1983 Mk1 for exactly 1 year now (it's my first car too) and I love everything about it, can't see myself ever selling it. Had a few adventures with it already and get a lot of respect for driving it, especially with it being in near mint condition. The girlfriend likes old cars too, always a bonus!

Can't keep using it as a daily driver though, not with the mileage I'm doing… so guess I'll just have to save up to buy a 2nd car asap

i think i depends on your circumstances

A member on the club has always said to me, once you have bought it, its bought. The cash has been spent and the cars there so even at the exact time it breaks you cant afford to fix it, leave it there and fix it when you can.

I love my sportline, but still question whether an engine conversion and sportline interior into my white cabby should have been the route i took …

I have been quite tempted on a tin top lately, but i could not at this stage afford or have the space for two so the cabby would have to go if i wanted a tin top.

My plan is to keep my for the foreseable, and then if selling would hopefully be because i am looking for tin top, but i do see it as cash which is accesible quickly if i ever need it, the car just goes up for a little less then its worth and it should sell quick

i would like to hope whatever happens be it a project or mint show car, there is always some type of mk1 parked in me garage :-)

It will probably have to make way for the Sierra RS500 cosworth when and if i can ever afford one lol
