How high do the clocks go?
Do the clocks on a 1.1 only go to 99,999 with a partial mile counter an extra digit in red?
Saw one today, seems strange - if so how do you know if it has been around the clock and how many times?

But they really only go to 99,999?
So is only way of checking by history, old MOTs etc?

Are the 1.1's really 5 digits where the rest of the range has 6 digit mileometer? Doesn't really make sense as a equipment specification, can it really be that much of a cost saving anyway, a couple of pence?
If they're 6 digits, then in theory 999,999 miles but in practice the clocks can and do wear, and stop while still leaving the speedo working. Whether its wear, or dirt/fluff building up, unsure.
I had a series 1 which stopped going round at around 140k miles, my other Mk1 Golfs havent stopped but admittedly are slightly under this.
I wonder who has the highest mileage Mk1 Golf?

That is why I asked, seemed strange but it was low milage (40 odd thousand with an additional digit as a red counter) - guy claimed to have MOTs etc showing the mileage as correct, but if that is right then the clock would reset at 99,999.
Anyone own a 1.1 who can verify?

Here the counter is in km and the red digit represents 100 metres maybe you have a clock in km :dontknow:
[edit] also the clocks I've seen with a red counter didn't have a trip counter (that you reset) so to get the accuracy they included the smaller divisions on the main counter but since there were only 6 holes the 100000th term got knocked off

The speedo was in both MPH and KPH but MPH was the main unit so I don't think so.
