how does yours drive/ride?

ive got a pretty nice mk1 gti in mostly standard form, ive had a few of them in the past including a 1600gti an 1800 modded gti and a sportline cab.
theyve all been in various states of tune. but have all had the same tendancy to bang over rough potholes or bumps. ive come to live with it over the years but a friend was in the car yesterday and said my shocks were knackered and needed replacing, it corners quite nicely and isnt boatish. and its had shocks replaced in the history but havnt checked when, could be 10 years ago. the cars done 150k

is this something that all mk1's do? or is there something that can be done to correct it. any experienced advice would be great.

heres a pic of my current mk1, not sure if its been lowered?

It looks like it has perhaps been lowered, only by 30-40mm though at a guess.

A good way of checking is to see if you have any play in the top mounts, mine bangs on bumps (feels like it's hitting the bump stop) but my top mounts are shagged you can pick them up for ?30 on eBay.

If I were you I'd get it checked for piece of mind but it seems a lot of MK1's bump as you described

Top mount kits are ?11.25 plus VAT per side from GSF.

That is the top mount itself, new bump stop and new sleeve/dust protector thing for the shock. :y:

Standard suspension is generally worn out by 80-90k,so if yours has not been changed in 10 years I reckon that's the starting point 8)

Speeding is like masturbation, everyone does it ,but it's not something you should record and put on the internet!!

Mine bumps and bangs like crazy when I go over bumps or pot holes. It sounds and feels terrible and a bit scary. Don't know if I need new shockers or suspension cuz its only done 92K. :dontknow:

Nip it your local TRUSTWORTHY garage if you have one and ask them to have a look, my shocks and springs were changed b4 i had it a year ago, but its only done 67k so hopefully a bit of life left in them yet.An mot shpuld pick out if the shocks are gone it will feel like your a captain in a boat not drivin a car if they have and it will brake strangley as well cause you will be loadin the worn shocks at different times.
