i have imported from japan befor so should be similar. You will need to pay customs tax which is around 10% on price of what you pay for car and then vat on the whole price, then it wont need sva test as over 10 years old just need mot. Then you will then go to dvla to registar and pay between ?50 to ?100 for the pleasue cant remeber the price oh yes then tax.

It dunt fit

Duties importing from the EU will be different. You may not have to pay anything.

I'm now mk1less, ahhhhhhh!

Go onto the DVLA website and find their guide to personally importing a car. Here's some pointers:

* (not sure) I think in Germany, when you change ownership of a car, both the buyer and seller need to visit a registration office at the same time. You'll be issued with export plates, number plates are linked to the person, not the car.

* In theory you can't drive a car on UK roads unless it is registered, so you cannot drive it home (legally). So you'll need to trailer it.

* Once in the UK, will need: registering with DVLA (>10 years old so won't need SVA), insurance, MoT, tax

Paul are you on about the plaes being registered to the person and not the car, I know it's somewhere not sure if it was Germany though?

Very easy to do imported my golf country in 2007.
when you buy the car you go to a place like the dvla in germany with the
person you buy the car from hand over the paperwork and they then make up a set of export plates there and then.off you drive the plates are legal over here for 1 month so in that time you get an mot and then register the car over here with dvla
any other questions give me a shout
good luck
