Nice find! - I like the early cabbys

Check out the cabby buyers guide and roof replacement guide. Whilst you have bought and also may not want to change the roof should give you some useful tips

Welcome aboard and get some pics up once you've got it

Cheers

Yes looks good for the ? and with MOT. (found it on Autotrader site).

Is it a GL or GLi?

The baggy seats are a known problem with that age of VW but it looks tidy and unmessed about with.

Any plans for it?

shes a GLI, i did thought i heard that these were later rebadged as GTI's cos the engines were the same, is this true??

yeh lots of plans! my imagination is going nuts, but i think im gonna try to keep it as original as possible, just inject some tlc into it.

needs new sills bit of de rusting and paintwork, new bumpers, new outer hood part, can ne1 tell me if those wheels are original??

hopefully should be a nice little project to try to get ready for RTTS.

GLi models have always had the same engine as the GTi hatchback of the same period (there was a GLi Jetta too). I think the change to GTI badging was more to do with marketing reasons, than anything else. The trim changed a bit too.

Mechanically identical to the tintop GTI but badged GLi by VW until about mid 80s? Had more GL like trim than the equivalent GTI though, a nice compromise esp on a cabrio.

Yes those are early GTI/GLi type alloys.

Glad to hear you're keeping standard must be very few original S1 dash cabrios left now.

Hope you don't find to much rust when you start but with recent-ish MOT shouldn't be that bad.

cheers for all your commments
was wondering wheres the best place to get parts for the golf? i need two new sills and bumpers.  also how hard is it to change the cambelt?

the seller also told me about an injector problem, well he said it was dead easy and cheap to fix, he said something about a plastic thing that holds the injector in place, u can reach your hand in and pull on the forth injector and it comes out, therefore at about 4k revs it starts to stutter and back fire a bit cos its sucking in oxygen. can any1 give me some info on this please
thankyou!

Probably refering to the injector seals, Take you 5 min if there not stuck and cost a quid.  Pull out each injector and replace the seal, you'll see it when they're in your hand, and push back in.

Check with seller when the cambelt was last changed, if unknown or not recently, do it.  Make sure all the fluids are clean and topped up and general service items are recently replaced.  Visual inspection of the brakes etc.  Anything untoward or not sure about post up for more advice.
