Hmm, just won a golf on ebay and the Hpi report isn't good!!

Hmmm!!

I've been searching for a Cabby and won this on ebay..

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160800752239?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649#ht_500wt_1287

Before I went to pick it up I did an hpi check on it and its thrown up a couple of 'issues'!!

- In 1995 it had done 99k
- in 1996 it had done 80k!!

The mileage now is 87k, i'm a bit doubtful that inbetween 1996 and now that it done 7k miles, so its probably had a least another 'haircut'!!

Also had a colour change in 2000 as well, it was brown and is now bronze and cream.

The car has been repainted so I'm assuming that this change was done then?

Are there different factory brown colours?  Maybe someone just changed the v5 colour to a more suitable one when it was repainted?

My main concern is what effect this would have if I sell it?  If its concerning me then its gonna bother someone else?

I'm not a Golf expert and would appreciate some input from people who know more about how the golf scene view cars like this?

Thanks

Shifty

imo i wouldn't worry about it, it may concern other but these are 20+year old cars

most will have a checkered past

clock could have been changed with the respray

might have clocked it if he is on a limited mile policy, so easy to do

I know exactly where that is I walked past it not long ago, it looked tidy but had a cover over the upper part of the car.

Price wise is it ok?

If your serious about buying a car do the HPI check first not after you have bought a car, its what its there for mate.

On a MK1 its not hard to wind the clocks back! but it could of had another set of clocks put in..

How long has the person owned it before you bought it? as it may have nothing to do with them..

No point in wasting money on a check if you don't end up winning the auction.

He's had it for a year, and says he never did a check when he bought it.

I'd go and have a good look at it and just make sure you're happy with it, wouldn't worry too much tho. Like Jellybelly said, these are old cars and all but the rarest examples will have a chequered past. A lot of mk1s have had engine conversions so you can never be sure of the true mileage anyway. Mine's had new clocks and a new engine. Personally, it wouldn't worry me too much. As long as you're happy that the car's straight, that's all that matters.

Looks okay for the price.

The engine in the ebay add is a 1800 so whatever the clock said wouldn't match the real mileage unless as said clocks changed/altered to match 'new' lump?

Well you cant really worry about the history of the car then once you have bought it..

I haven't picked it up yet, the seller wanted me to pay £250 deposit before seeing it.  I did the check before I handed over money blind to a stranger!!

If he's made claims about the mileage being genuine, then you could pull out based on the HPI report. But if he's not, then its just fair game for this age car, the clocks have probably been changed etc.

I'm a bit concerned about the 1.8 engine now!!  I thought I was getting a fairly straight and original car, its looking more and more like 'triggers broom'

my car was first registered as black, but in 85 the new owner said it was grey on the logbook, it has never had a colour change but shows u on the hpi.. doesn't bother me as i know it has he original paint on it..

and condition takes precedence over mileage now that the cars are getting around 30 years old..

Colour is correct, it's not bronze. It's metallic brown.

am i missing something obvious but where does it say 1800 ? it looks like a 1600 to me

personally i wouldnt worry, you should be buying on condition, unless there is a massive folder with history to prove genuine milage any claims are with a pinch of salt. car looks good and i would say worth £1250 all day long (at the beginning of the summer prices are at their highest). in the grand scheme of things its still a cheap car value cant really go much lower, just dont worry and use it and enjoy it  :D  :D  :D

If I'm not mistaken, its a 1.8 as it has the expansion bottle, the 1.6 had a top fill rad..

Cheers for the advice.

Spoke to the seller and the engine number is different from the one on the V5.

I'm really torn, I like the car but the issues are a bit off putting.

Sorry but my Clubby estate isn't for sale!!
