There's a buying guide on the homepage which should help. Usually it's best to start with a small engine model for insurance purposes etc! It could be a 1.1 petrol ('Golf C' 3 door, 'Golf C Formel E' 5 door are the later models) or a 1.3 petrol ('Golf CL' 5 door, 'Golf Driver' 3 door etc). There are a few 1.5 petrol models aswell, and then of course 1.6 and 1.8 GTI's! There are GTI and non-GTI Cabriolets aswell.
They're very simple under the bonnet compared to modern cars and prove MUCH easier to work on should the need arise. If you can afford a good one, then you can learn bits and bobs as you go along without being forced to carry out a full restoration straight away! Haynes Manuals help a lot with learning about what's what. These are nearly always listed on Ebay etc.

Yes, I sometimes forget not all mk1's are quite as relentlessly reliable as my diesel.    But even if a mk1 engine doesn't necessarily need 'fixing' there's always service stuff like oil changes, filter changes etc, which are easy to get access to and do yourself with limited knowledge - often a Haynes Manual and basic tools are all you need. It's suprising how quickly you can learn about the car just through having a keen interest in it during ownership!

If you can find a good one, go for a 1983 Golf 1.3 Driver as these are friendly on insurance, easy to work on, economical without being too slow and have all the nice GTI bits already fitted so you don't have to do very much to them to make them look good.

…and the no text speak thing on here kills me too.

Welcome to the site!
