Help!!!

I am looking into putting a towbar on Murphy, but was wondering whether anyone knew what kind of weight he would pull safely?
He is a 1980 Cabby 1.6 GLi.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
Sam

You'll have a weight plate somewhere on the car, eg on the bonnet slam panel (it will also have the chassis number, so its also known as the VIN plate). There's a small chance it will be blank but I think it will have the towing weights.

Various Mk1 Golfs have a towing capacity (braked) of 800, 1000, 1200kg. Unbraked weight is limited to half the car's kerb weight.

If you took your licence after 1997 also check what you're licensed to tow (see DVLA website). Basically your trailer MAM needs to be below car kerb weight.

Thanks
I did my trailer test two years ago, so I know im covered to tow what i want!!
The haynes manual says braked is between 1000 and 1200 so it should be ok.
Better than the other halfs 1.3 fiesta anyway!!!

i think also you can only pull 3/4 the weight of your towing vehicle e.g

car is 1000kg you can pull 750kg

i know the law is something like that but you will have 2 check

Nope, you can pull, legally, up to the max towing weight as specified by the manufacturer. It will be on a plate on the car, and if its not detailed properly on the plate, its the manufacturer (eg Volkswagen's) recommendation.
