help with my VW golf conertable

Hi I,m a newbie to VW golfs . Mine is a 1986 golf convertable and i have been getting mixed opinions on weather it is a mk1 or mk2. it is on a c plate and works brill for original . my plan was to fully rebuild this car but i,m not sure if i can afford it after reading some members on this site.

It all depends if you can do alot of the work yourself if you can you can save alot of money but could take alot of time depending on your mentality, like i want this done asap and will work my socks off every spare minute, but if not it can start gettin expensive. If the car works fine now why not just update a few things rather than doin a full rebuild.

Plus what are you classing as a rebuild?

It dunt fit

there is some confussion over what is a mk1 or mk2 the mk1 cabriloet is based on the original cabriolet with a face lift. The mk2 Cabby is based on the Golf mk3 shape. How big are your pockets? I prefer my cabbies original, but thats my personal prefrence. If you got the space to strip down and re build and the funds too, then it would depend on how bad a condition the car is and what the problems are with it. Get some piccies up.

my car drives and feels good but i just think at 23 yrs old she deserves a remodle. the car feels like a mk 1 . wasnt there a year that they stopped building them and started the mk2 or mk3

There were a few made in 93 then afterwards it was the Mk3 shape. Crazy Quiff does a power steering kit for the golfs, as it was not an option fitted, unless in the states  at some point.

As to value, how long is a piece of string? a lot depends on condition, age, rarity of the model and of course it's only ever worth what some one is prepared to pay. Have a look at the cars for sale section, E bay etc, I think a standard cabby (clipper model) in good nick ?1,500 maybe more, sportline ?2,000 and upwards. Rivage ?2,500 upwards. CC ???? Quartet ???? all depends again on condition/spec etc, as with the Rivage some came with heated leather seats, so in theory should command more money. The subject will vary from person to person, especially if one is a seller and one is a buyer.
Good luck with the computer mate, also.

Give it an overhaul, and whilst you're at it, carry out some updating.  If you're looking at a power steering upgrade, I would anticipate this would need an amount of stripping in the engine bay so why not do the lot whilst you're in there? Then you can clean, tidy and update whilst you're at it?

You'll struggle to command good money as a sale, and will probably be left feeling a little deflated with ?1500 - 2k in your sky rocket.  I feel like cabbys are worth more that that, but it's what the market dictates right now.

I'd be interested in how the power steering upgrade goes.  My missus is forever whinging about the steering, and I don't want her building up arm muscles like arnie either.
