Just got my car sorted, but on a lesurely drive to my gfs my car started making this  awful clattering noise from inside the engine sounded like a really loud tapping!! location is near the top under the rocker cover or there abouts!!!!
WHAT CAN IT BE??
As i coast clutch down the noise stops faster speed higher the noise???
Almost sounds like something is spinning and catching but i dunno what i cud be. PS deffo inside the engine nothing is catching on the outside alternator vbelt cam belt etc

Usually more gradual.

Have you had the cam belt cover off yet to see if it's frayed and on its way out

pinking?
I had to replace the oil pressure regulator because under stating i would loose all compression due to the tappet raising to high could be related i guess. I use to have the cam belt cover problem so it aint that i know the noise

Cam belt and tentioner have been replaced about 3 months ago

Could be the cambelt tensioner too. Mine gave up about 5000kms ago

Is it road speed related or engine speed related?

Could be a duff CVJ

CVJ!!?? whats that? CV joint by any chance what like a driveshaft one?

And, higher revs the noise gets louder and quicker it can be sittting still and when i rev it the noise is faster, when the clutch is down or being towed no noise at all!

last time we had a clattering banging noise it was the engine trying to tell us it couldn't breathe because the air intake had kinked. unfortunately it was too little to late and it went pop!!  :dontknow:

if your dipping the clutch and the noise goes away i doubt its internal engine components,

as said it sounds more like an inner CV joint on its way out, very common and sounds horendous, the noise increases with speed too when they go so that would be the first place i would check

dont do what i did and replace ther outer one only to find it was actually the inner one gone

oh  8O  dont even run it then! maybe your oil pump is weak? either that or you have slipped a shell   sometimes you can get away with just replacing a set of big end shells, if the crank is marked it will ahve to be re ground

not expensive job to do, but expensive to get it all stripped and out the engine

bummer if it it that

if the noise goes away when clutch is pressed then could be clutch related or release bearing or even gbox.

dont assume the noise is worst case just yet, noise also travels around the engine so ideally use a long screwdriver hold one end to parts of the engine other end to ear acts as sort of stethascope might help pinpoint noise.

if big end has gone it will be a definite knocking noise not rattle
