Have you ever had to change the clutch on your golf?

So I went to my mechanic to check about some lack of power (slipping) on third gear mostly. He said that its the clutch because he tried to stall it and it wouldn't  :?  so I suppose it's quite serious.

Thing is I don't think it has ever been changed since I had the car (28 years +) unless the vw guys changed it when changing the engine  :dontknow:

So did you ever have to change it due to wear?

Do you think 28 years is the average lifespan (if it is that old)?

Sorry if I'm being stupid but I'm not an expert like you guys

10 years/80,000 miles or so, probably the average lifespan. So its probably been done before, once or twice. They do wear out gradually, over time. It depends on how its been driven, etc.

Will be doing mine again this weekend-cant wait (not). Had gearbox off last weekend to find out what was up with it (shattered pressure plate) then had to put it back together to limp through this week. Now got it all todo again :(

Had mine replaced in January, dont know if it was original one or not but made a massive difference :) cost 200 quid for garage to do it though & then put the cable in the wrong place :(

Yep, mine needed replacing….it's a 1991 model. I think it was that problem (of many recently) that had the funny smell. Stick your head under the bonnet and if you notice an awful smell, that'll be the clutch…probably….

How hard is replacing the clutch?
I can do most jobs if is just a few nut sand bolts. I don't have tons of tools.

Its not that hard if you're used to it, if you're not then its hard. Maybe 3 spanners?
