Gti hubs for 1.8t conversion??

Post

Hi after a bit of advice from anyone in the know.
I've bought a set of front hubs from a Tintop 1.8gti 1984 (A reg) now I'm gathering bits to do a 1.8t conversion so far I got a 1.8t agu eng and matching mk4 gearbox so I gotta buy some 100mm flanges for the box. But I'm confused as hell over the driveshaft and hub configuration thing. Now I've searched and I hear a lot about match the hubs to the shafts. So I also bought the driveshafts from the same gti thinking they would be 100mm. I don't have my callipers at home to measure accurately but I think the inner cv is more like 90ish maybe 94mm.
Have I completely wasted my money or is something salvageable from my pile of bits. For example can I buy 100mm inner joints and use what is already on the outer ?
Cheers for any advice
Darren.

Well I've done some more google'in, as I got no replys on here LOL :-)
Ill put up what I've found incase its of help to others.
Well the hubs from the gti are the same as the 1.1c, splines are also the same size in the hub.
I've found this post on vwwatercooled Australia
100mm cv's on mk1 driveshafts - Page 2
It basically tells you how you can get 100mm inner joints onto the existing shafts.
Very simple task will involve a trip to an engineer or someone with a lathe.
Hope it helps someone in the future.

Hi Andy, yea will do just looking on eBay to see if I can possible get me a 108mm inner joint cheap enough to try and fashion that on to my drive shaft.
I don't know if anyone had tried that before (I'm not gonna ask though ;)  ;) )

Hi, I don't know how you feel about travelling but if you don't mind I own an engineering company in Bedfordshire (Leighton buzzard) with a couple of lathes & I'm sure we could sort that out for you if you want

I had a quick look & it doesn't look too tricky. If you'd like it done I'll get some dimensions before you come up just to make sure we can fit it in the machines ok & then we can get it sorted

for direct fit what you need are post-84 mk1 cabrio and scirocco gti 100mm shafts. 88ish onwards 1.8 carb switched to 100mm shafts too i believe. the issue is sometimes the outer cvs bind in mk1 bearing carriers, so you need to grind for clearance or fit the matchign post-84 bearign carriers from any mk1 cab/rocco (they all got them after 84, even those with 90mm shafts)

or as above, machine the inside lip on the shaft till the 100mm cvs fit :)

Sorry for the delay (I'm up to my neck at the mo !).  What I'd need to know is the length of the driveshaft, the rough diameter at each end & the diameter of the shaft itself (the reason being is that the lathes are industrial & have a tube that the driveshaft would need to go down so I just want to make sure it would fit down it OK)

ah right well have a shufti at this here thread, somewhere around page 2 or 3 the length is confirmed:

cant help with the diameters i dont have those to hand, but hopefully someone can have a quick measure in the middle of one of the shafts to get the diameter

Thanks again John I've got a spare set of shafts so I will have a measure of the diameter.
