Golf Question...

Hi Golf fans!

Quick background on me, and then the question. I'll try to keep it brief and get to the point!

I'm an Automotive Design student in Coventry, just starting my final degree project, and my chosen topic is "What makes an automotive classic?". I've picked out some obvious favourites - the original Mini, Aston Martin DB5, Ferrari Dino, Jaguar E-Type, etc. But one that has proved to be very popular is the VW Golf!

So… what has made the MK1 Golf such a classic, and helped it stand the test of time? Why do you like/love/can't get enough of Golf models? And can you tell me a little bit about your Golf (if you own one) or what would be your perfect Golf (if you don't own one)?

Thanks for any and all replies!

It was and still is the original and best hot hatch, before it there was no such thing. It quite simply started a whole new sector in the car market :)

The Mk1 Golf at the time of manufacture was VW's 1st foray into the mass produced small family hatchback that was watercooled, the design philosophy was simple and practical (no nonsense) it basically did what it said on the tin, the big + was reliability and build quality
it may have paled in to automotive obscurity if it hadn't been for a small team of engineers and designers who came up with the idea of lumping a fuel injection unit into a 1.6 engine and stiffening up the suspension and other tweaks
the GTi was born and the initial run of 500 soon became 1000s and a "classic" was born

I'm not sure whether the humble Golf would be as revered as much as it is now, if them boffins hadn't come up with the GTi and invented the 1st "Hot hatch"

Dont ask what your club can do for you, but what can you do for your club?

Don't assume the Mk1 Golf is a classic. The GTI is, but then what is/isn't? Who defines what a classic is or isn't? There's some people who will say that the Austin Maxi is a classic, after all. Or the Morris Marina, etc. If its simply based on age then its pretty meaningless.
