Golf Mk1 Cabriolet

Hi i am wanting to get a golf cabriolet but its going to have to live on the road. I am worried about how secure a golf cabriolet is and what i can do to make it more secure. I was also wondering how many golf Mk1 cabriolet drivers park there car on the road. Thanks Chris

hi there.

i have a mk1 gti cabriolet and am lucky enough to have private land to park on but when i go out at the weekend i leave it in town and its been ok so far.
I have a stoplock for my handbrake/gear knob, a chain than goes around my seat braket and round the steering wheel with a chub lock and an immobiliser but am always worried people will slit the roof open.

I just dont leave anything in it atall so theres nothing to tempt people.

You can never tell to be honest. I lived in a dodgy part of Cambridge for a few years and nothing ever happened to my car, which was parked on the street each day. Some bastard slashed the new roof a week after I moved to rich-ville Annecy in France! Not what you'd expect.

I've left the roof down often. Just made sure the glovebox was locked and stereo face off. I did have an alarm, which I used when I first bought the car, but I became slack after a while and never had a problem anyway.

My new Golf has a very cool engine disabler with a hidden button inside the car itself. Really, really, really well hidden to the point that I still struggle to find it!

BTW, my old one is for sale in the UK if you decide you want to buy one. See here:

I'm still looking for the button myself, mate!  :P

It's locked up in a garage in a pretty ski resort in France. No more street parking for me baby (gotta look after the paintwork, especially on the new one, which has been garaged its entire life).

only recently got my cabby but make sure you leave nothing visible in the car, my car has a clifford virtual key fitted and a dual alarm / engine cut off switch activated by a hidden button, i am quite confident that the car is safe, but if some bugger is going to slash the roof, there going to slash the roof, same problem with all soft-tops, not much you can do, just use common sence and im sure it will be fine.

if youre that worried about the roof getting knifed why not get it stab proofed! ? theres all these companies making stab proof jumpers and school uniforms so im sure you could find someone to line the hood on ur mk1! maybe even a little business opportunity for you?!

I have pretty much left mine everywhere and anywhere and its been fine so far….being and old "classic" car a lot of people just seem to admire it as opposed to want to vandalise it!
that said i keep expecting to come back to it and find trim or the P-caps missing
Mite be the fact that i also have a CCTV sticker in it  as she is watched overnight

I live in a fairly rough part of Doncaster and park my cabbie on the street. I have not had any problems, I cover her up at night so no one passing by knows what it is. My glove box has no key so I leave anything of any value locked up in the boot. Gonna get her an alarm soon but I don't worry about her being parked up on my street.

Driven a cabby daily for about the last 9 or 10 years and lived in 4 different places in that time. Never ever had a problem.

Always leave the roof down when I'm out unless I think it's going to rain while I'm away. Leave all my cds in the middle console thingy and things like jumpers, jackets and stuff on the back seat and never had anything so much as a car park ticket nicked!

Just don't leave it parked under a tree with the roof down!!!!!

Go for it! Get one, drive it and love it!!
