Gearbox cleaning

Good afternoon mk1 fans right just a quick one what's the best way to clean a gearbox casing off all the grim muck thats built up over the years.
Would it damage the gearbox if I jet wash it ???? :-(

Get some degreaser and spray it all over and if possible work in with a brush, then rise off. I know some peole do use jet washers but it can cause problems with the electrics in the engine bay.

jet wash is fine. just don't go mad around the flanges lol

give it a good rinse with the washer, then some degreaser of choice, gunk etc then another washer session and probably wire brush to finish.

The gearbox is not in the car just brought it.

Ah well blast away then.

It won't get damaged then.

I'm not too sure about doing the inside with a pressure washer but the outside will be fine.

Was just going to do outside ready to paint.

Ive done two inside as long as you are not manic or concentrate in one place to long I dont see a problem

I've only brought a small jet wash so it won't blast it into next week.

i got a post somewhere where i first used GUNK then traffic film remover and then last scrub was with petrol (not really recommended)

Got a little bit done on the gearbox tonight. But then started jet washing the decking. :-(

done this exactly on a few boxes n works great , to go even further ive done this last one with alloy wheel cleaner n a jet rinse too , will brush it up n that should be it more as clean for painting

Ive used rotary wire brushes, then sprayed it with UHT silver engine paint.

Done it a couple off times with gunk still needs doing with the wire brush though.

Right I've almost done the cleaning is there any things I should do when it comes to painting the gearbox????

Make sure all dirt is off and paint it with your chosen product

Can any one tell me if I should remove the tower on the gearbox so it's more easy to paint?
