g40 or g60 this winter?

This winter i will be putting a new heart in my golf and i have 2 options at the moment. it curently has the standard 1300 4 speed. a great little engine but needs to be thrashed to get anything out of it.

These are my two options at the moment;

1. complete g40 conversion with race bottom end. lots of work done. revs to 8000 rpm. engine has done 105k, supercharger has done less than 1k.
    minimum of 170 bhp.

2. complete g60 conversion. not sure what has been done to it or what the milage is. i think as standard they are about 165bhp.

Both conversions are the same price.
i will get which ever one i go for completely stripped down and done up whilst the bodyshop guys smoot and spray my engine bay.

Is the g40 much lighter than the g60?

Im no racer but i would love the power to over take when i need to.
i dont want the car to be too heavy because it handles so well at the moment.

i will be very greatfull for your opinions.

Thanks

Rich

I would have to say the G60 as i have one in my mk1.

However, having owned a golf rallye and a polo G40 i would say the 40 is a good option, I dont know if it is an easier install !!!

Being a 1.3 shell wouldn't the g40 bolt straight in with no moving of the mount like you'd have to with the g60?

G40 must be right on the edge producing that power, do you have torque curves to compare ?
G60 every time for me, a simple chip and pulley will see the G60 produce 190bhp, with a brilliant torque curve that suits the mk1 weight balance.

i dont have the torque curves sadly.
i recon the G60 is the way to go though.
i cant wait for summer when everything will be finished! i'll try to buy a camera and show you guys.
if my engine bay looks half as awesome as lhasadreams in that pic, i'll be pleased.
i'll deffinately fit disks all round whilst fitting the engine. I am running 15s so g60 brakes up front if i can find some. does anyone know what i would have to do to change the drums on the rear to disk brakes? and which ones would be best?

I'm going G60, just keep the rear drums mate.

Just ripped the corrado to bits today as it happens!!

Rear disks everytime, not much difference to the braking but maintains the pedal feel perfectly, whereas the crap drum adjusters just allow the pedal to get longer and longer…

You need some mk2 stub axles, late mk2 calipers and carriers or mk3 items (some folks use mk4 alloy ones, but you then need special handbrake cables and unions), 16v Scirocco handbrake cables and clip that holds them to the caliper, mk2 gti disks, inner and outer bearings, stub nut, spacer, cotter pin and dust cap, bearing grease seal and rear dust cap. Oh and pads !!!!

Thanks for the comment chap and good luck with building your motor up :-)

Cheers,
Ade

how much are you getting the G60 conversion done for? I want to do the same to my mk1 golf cabby.
Whats the cost roughly to get a full G60 conversion?
Does anyone know any specialists in London area that could do the job at a good price?

Thanks
