From 1pm to 7pm this is what i did to my 79gti today....
Method - dropped rear axl, (soaked the 4 bolts in wd40 for 45mins first and followed the loosening method i read about on here, worked a treat, no snaps…. Undid top strut bolts so axl dropped fully Did not want to remove exhaust as was custom welded in thats why dropped axl n undid coilovers.
Wirebrushed under body removing any fine surface rust, esp where the fuel tank lives. I then painted in Black Hammerite rust proofer, everywhere…mesy job….
Fitted alrady hammerited 2nd hand V good condition fuel tank and all pipes. Re-fitted rear axl and coilovers.
Battery dead so gonna charge it 2nite, 2mor avro i will half fill her up with petrol and get her going again 8)
This is the 2nd tank change ive ever done, did my first one nearly ten yrs ago and snapped the axl bolt stud…..nightmare…this time rnd, much smoother - its not a bad job actually! just a bit dirty…. 8)

i did this in about the same time about a month ago, and like you say it isn't as bad a job as people think, i put it off until last as i heard all the stories about studs breaking but all mine were fine i did however have to cut the stainless steel exhaust off that i had had fitted the day before doh !!! you can see mine in my build thread ..
