For Sale vs Sold

Just browsing mainly here but it happens in other forums and places too, it seems that some cars or parts are vastly overpriced! Without actually linking to any items, I'm sure you know the kind of thing I mean. I wonder how many are actually sold at that price or anywhere near. Do people just put the price on and if it doesn't sell, they just keep it for ever? Or are they actually wanting to sell it instead of constantly tripping over the thing? Or….are there people with lots of money who are happy to pay (what are IMHO) high prices?

i tend to price things according too how hard they are to get, if they are rocking horse plop they are worth a little extra, and if they are not RHP then i'd probably give it away, but it's nice to get something back out of it,

whould you say these are overpriced:

No they're not the items I was thinking of, they seem okay, maybe a little high considering condition - but then you've allowed a little, for bartering? For example, if I needed fuel tank straps, I'd be bartering with an opening offer of ?2 against your ?5.

Supply and Demand

Having just had permission from SWMBO to get a project and chosing a Mk1 cabrio I'm not quite in touch with the going rate for those items which are generally traded, wheels, seats, steering wheels etc. but as with everything saleable something is only worth what it will fetch in the open market.
This forum is not 'open' in the same way Ebay (as a for instance) is - hence as with most adverts it would go on the forum first and then if unsold onto Ebay. Where it must be said stuff would GENERALLY seem to fetch less money than the original asking price.
So more questions….
Do purchasers 'trust' a long standing forum member more than an Ebay trader ?
And so does buying from someone on here add a premium ?
Or is it just that enthusiasts who share a love of, well anything, tend to pay more ?!

i understand what you are saying about some prices, once in a while i see some daft prices, i can only assume

it's the person who has been sold a car and the seller say they are "rare" worth about "?400 them p slots" then the buyer trys to sell them a ?350 on here thinking they are a bargain

things are only worth what you are willing to pay for it.

If things are over priced they wont sell and if they are under price they sell like hot cakes

people now think that everything to do with a mk1 golfs is "Rare" which is not the always the case. so if the seller thinks what they have is "Rare" item they will put up the price sky high

i think you can get 1 or 2 genuine people who dont really have a clue what there stuff is worth and may put it up for silly money, but when people do know and try to play on the "rare" thing or just generally take the micky i think its just out of order.

Everyones trying to keep thier mk1's on the road and hopefully if something is stupidly over priced it will just never sell untill the seller becomes more realistic with thier valuations.

For example some guy at Volksfest Bristol this year wanted ?120 for a set of RA's that were knackered with no tyres  8O

like people have said surely if its too over priced it just wont sell ….

i base my prices on what they have sold for in the past.

tho i must have been under valueing some stuff as i get mental prices on ebay, example is set of non mfa clocks, if i see a wanted ad id say ?25 posted. put some on ebay and got almost ?80 with the post 8O

personally think it depends on whats being sold and for what reason that should determine a price

for example i have a very very mint set of tintop gti door cards with the speaker/door pockets and also the matching rear quarter cards.

a realistic sale price for them would be about ?40 but i wouldnt part with them for double that, and i dont even have a tintop anymore.

i know im getting another tintop when the right one turns up and could pretty much guarentee that the ones i have will be better than what will be on that car so its going to make them worth more to me.

you cant really put down sellers for sticking stuff for sale on a forum at 5x the true value (not myself, anyone thats had anything from me can verify that)   its the folks that havnt researched the true values and BUY them at these inflated prices that want shooting

thankyouplease

I agree, lack of time researching availability costs a lot of buyers an extra bob or two. But sometimes we all implulse buy

i would never do that, i'd rather make a loss on iit rather than make a profit like that

When I originally started this thread I was thinking more of cars than parts. A week on, and the same things are still happening (cars going for sale, IMHO with too high a price tag, and remaining unsold).

I was keen to hear from sellers, or buyers of cars.

But it appears that there's a proportion of people on the forum who use the classifieds areas (they put adverts in there) but don't post elsewhere; or seemingly don't browse/read all the other areas of the forum.

there would be a very good reason for that.

you will find that most people will buy a car, run it for a while and when they cone to selling it, they will pop it on the internet for a wider audience,
hence the newbies selling cars.

makes perfect sence.

a good example is the car on offer at ?16,495.Theyll never sell it at half the price,or even a quarter.
