feeling the heat

I've never modified a car before and my parents have signed over theirs to me, it's not in too great a condition and is pretty rusted. The original engine is still in good nick and so is the stainless steel exhaust, but not much else is right. He's lhasa green with all the original tinted windows and so far has been pretty much untouched, i want to keep him as original as possible, excpet the interior because it's not feminine enough (sorry). The wheel arches are rotted and the screws holding the trims on have become part of the metalwork. Paintjobs poor and generally the undersides gone, even better last year my mum destroyed most of the fuel system (god knows how) on its first run in 5 years. I generally don't have a clue where to start, do i replace all the bits first and then get it welded or the other way round, and at what point do i start the mods?? once i've gotten it the way it used to look or coincide modifying while im getting it back together, and as a general idea how much is this gonna cost me??
I really want to get hughie back on the road and looking sexy again, but i have no idea where to start, please help???

Generally you'd remove components necessary to get to the areas for welding (I'm thinking about, rear axle area) and refurb or replace them as needs be and then gradually put the car back together that way. So you'd probably want to get it welded during replacing parts, if that makes sense. Basically you need to plan things so you don't have to later remove stuff, you've already taken off-on.

Fuel system - you need to properly diagnose stuff etc rather than simply randomly replacing parts, which will end up costing quite a lot of money.

Depends what mods you have in mind?????

mainly trying to get as much from the engine as possbile but ive been told not to do that till i've been running it a few months, or ill be replacing that as well. the rest is all going to be inside, the seats, the dash, and a massive speaker system.
and if anyone knows how to get cruise control in there, it'd be great.

thats a 60mph cruise control system. you'd need to reduce the size by 1/2 for a 30mph model.
(very good dave)

Its pretty obvious none of you have actually used a brick to hold the throttle open, on a Mk1 Golf. To get decent performance, you need the weight of 2 bricks.
