There's a bunch of tech info on series 1s on the home page; and brochures for various years in the gallery. 75bhp springs to mind though.

I'm not convinced you can get a 1.6GL, at least in hatchback form. At launch, it was a 1.5 and they were badged N, L, LS, S, GL, GLS. The GL was not available in UK and was high spec trim but 1.3 engine; the GLS was high spec trim and 1.5 engine. In 1975 they changed the 1.5 to 1.6, and in 1977 they changed back to a 1.5. When the badges were changed, they went approx:

L –> C
LS –> CL
GLS –> GL

for the UK. So the GL with a big block always had a 1.5, not 1.6.

Cabriolets (non-injection, bottom range ones) started out as 1.5 and were badged GLS. They changed to GL badging, then 1.6 engine (not sure if same time though). And this continued until around 1986 when the Clipper took over from the GL as the bottom of the range. The 1.6 in a cabriolet (well, 1984 on for sure) was a different unit than the 1588cc of the earlier hatchbacks, it was a 1595cc unit also used in Jetta and Golf Mk2.

My current 1.5 has 1.6 stamped on front of cylinder head but doesn't mean it is a 1.6, I reckon that is where the confusion is.

Unless my 1.5 has a 1.6 cylinder head on top lol.
