Engine no???

can anyone help me here? i've just found out that my golf doesnt have its original engine so i need to inform the DVLA… only thing is i cant actually find the engine no on it??? im thinking that maybe the engine in it may be from a mk2 or 3, any ideas????

post a pic of the engine and im quite sure someone will be able to tell you if its from a mk1 or not. apart from that i cant be of much help really. sorry.

The engine number is on a flat plate just above/between cylinders 3 and 4. No doubt you will have to clean away / wire brush the rust off, the area, to read it properly. In front of the number will be a 2 or 3 letter (or numbers) code, which will tell you the engine you have.
