TBH its not just a simple case of turning it down - you'd never know if you'd turned it down enough, or too much (too lean running) after all. Guessing the mixture is not advisable and there's loads of bodges out there but really you need a proper gas analyser. Also you never said if it was CO or HC which was too high. Or if it was carb (and if so which one), or K-Jet. the principle is the same but the mixture screw is located in different places etc.

turing the mixture down will help, but if you have not done any work on the engine or fuel it would sugesset that you have worn parts and turning any thing up or down will only mask the  problem, and not solve it,does that make sense???

on the road to purchasing a gas analyzer now, it failed on CO and its a weber 34 ich on a 1.1 GG engine, was just hoping to see if theres any tricks of the trade for knocking a few % off or if it was just as you said mixture screw adjustment, as it was only just over 1% over. Once I get the analyser I'll set about the mixture screw and see what I can do

yeah that makes sense jaycab, im guessing its the carb thats not been set up for the engine properly, masking the problem is no bother to me aslong as it gets through the test

the only trick of the trade i seam to know about carbs is get a webber replacment.... ,although i belive that is not a cheap option,i belive needle jets in the vag carb wear out :dontknow:

There is no trick for a 1.1 carb engine, and no trick is necessary. The CO should be about 1.5% at idle, the allowable is something like 4.5%, so thats 3x more. Basically, the limit is generous and only a very poorly set up car, or one with a fault, will fail the test.

i just re read your post look for a webber specialest and they will have the jets not sure of cost.but a lot cheaper than a hole new carb :dontknow:

yeah paul_c its probably not set up right as I've not looked at setting it up since I've owned the car. Seen as though there are no tricks and none are necessary I'll take wait for my gas analyser and set up the car and aim for the 1.5% CO level and then I will be within there generous allowance. Jaycab cheers for the help mate think I'm going to blag it through the test then look at getting it set up properly or look to where the fault may lay.

my car just failed on emissions too, 7.5% at idle and 11% when revved.. something not right and since it has twin 40's i left it with the nice chap at the garage to sort, just hoping it doesn't cost me a fortune!!

It's revving on idle at about 2500rpm and i dont know why, turned down the idle screws and it just ran like a bag of nuts, but still at the high rpm!! Beats me…

MK1 16v on twin 40's + my name's Stewart
