Dumb question - lights on different models...

Sorry this is probably a seriously stupid question, but;

What is the difference with the models with 2 headlights and those with 4?

Also, on the rear, some have smaller lights than others.

Is this to do with year of manufacture?

the small lights came on the earlier models so yea year of manufacture.

series 1 and cabby have the smaller rear lights.
the lights were changed on the series to for 2 reasons
1 was to bring the fog light into the rear cluster for homolgation
and 1 was because the original designer had wanted the larger rear lights in the first place was denied byVW.

one of these isn't true. the other is lie.

sweet okay. so the mk1 was split into series 1 and 2, series 2 having larger lights.

So what about the headlights?

as far as i can remember, no cars came out of the vw factory with 4 headlights, it was just an aftermarket "upgrade" that lots of people chose to make.
(i think)

Not quite.

Some models came as standard with 4 headlights - for example it was an option on GTI for much of its life; standard on the Campaign, and standard on the GX. I dare say it was a factory option on other models too.

In addition to the factory option, it was available as a dealer option (wasn't too complicated for them to do the wiring and refit the 4 lamp grille).

In addition, it was a popular aftermarket option too.

There's 2 variations - Campaign and GX had the inner lamps as foglamps, this can be determined by observing the THICK vertical lines on the lens (driving lamps also had vertical lines, but they are much less distinct). In operation, the foglights would have behaved differently to the spot lamps. Foglights would not come on on main beam, and with the fog light switch at its 1st position (from off). I think they were also configured to come on with the momentary headlamp 'flash' too.

Spot lamp wiring varies - some were done to be always on with main beam, some might have been wired to a separate dash switch. In either case, they SHOULDN'T come on with dipped beam, but I dare say many are wired up so they can (if controlled by a separate switch).

Almost, driving lamps and front fog lamps were never a factory option. Driving lamps fitted as standard on the 16S (using Cibie units) and late GTi Cabrios (including special editions). Fog lamps standard on GX, Campaign, Pirelli, GTi Plus and Trophy models.
